I remember the days when seconds used to drive to 1 or 2 designated water points (on the bike route) and you could stop next to the car and get what ever you wanted, stop and picnic or whatever...and then on the run they could follow you the whole way by car or bicycle or on foot... we used to see some pretty ingenious bicycles (with umbrellas) and other methods used for seconding.

It wasn't that long ago....shoulda taken more pictures

jip remember on the run I asked my second for water.he was on a bicycle carrying my water.he answered that I ran so slow that he drank all the water and if I had run faster there would have been water left.an early form of roadrage ensued.we are still friends today and he will still be standing next to the road reminding me of that day in a month's time.

That's funny reteid.Nowadays it must be boring for the supporters just to stand there and wait and just see you for a couple of seconds. In 2014 SWAMBO was supporting with other mates whose spouses was doing the race. She got stuck into the alcohol and one the first lap of the run was getting quite happy, by lap 2 she was on fire, waving pom poms that she found some where and shouting at the top of her voice how much she loved me and I looked so cute. That left the group that I was with something to tease me for the next Km's.   By Lap 3 it was game over for her and she was dancing, chatting and shouting encouragement to everyone even the refs. After I finished I found her passed out in someones camping chair. I recovered quicker than her the next day.

Motivation slump this week... struggled to activate anything until yesterday. Had a great weekend and felt awesome but Monday tuesday and wednesday were a drag... Managed a 10km run last night and 60km ride this morning and starting to feel a bit more alive.

As for the taper, I will be tapering from Two Oceans.

Lots of foam roller, chilled time lapping in the dam and some high intensity low impact stuff on the bike accompanied by some jogs around the block.

4 weeks to go fellows.... The business end.... I find myself refusing to go anywhere or talk to people for fear of getting any sort of dreaded illness this close to the event! Bubble boy!

I am not competing this year but I agree, also miss the 'old' days of 'personal' seconding, especially for a back marker like me.

The 'year of the storm' I got a top from my wife for the run which I think saved my life...I was still out there after 15 hours and she asked a marshal in the designated zone whether she could give it to me. He suggested she put it on the ground and walk away so that I 'pick it up' randomly.

In 2014 I was warned/shouted at by a marshal as my friends walked alongside me on the run into the finishing straight...this was at hour 16.25...

I know rules are rules but surely some common sense/perspective can be applied.

Seconds have got it easy nowadays but don't under estimate how hard good seconding is.

In the good days as per my earlier post my wife / second had to go fetch my canoe, carry it back to the car and load it onto the roof and then drive (try find) the bike seconding point before I got there, then drive to the start of the run and pick up / load my bike before driving along the entire run route (42k) very slowly and stopping to hand out whatever I asked for... Point to point race with each transition in a completely different place.....That night she and my friend who ran/ walked with me on the run were asleep long before I was....

Truth be told, I am battling with motivation some days and the rain this morning did not help. Hopefully it does not rain this afternoon so I can go an cycle around the block a couple of times. Kinda wish the event was on this weekend to get it over an done with...

I was feeling the same last week. I really struggled with motivation and my energy levels were non existent. I did the 2nd big day workout (basically a race sim) on Friday and it actually went much better than the previous one. This week is recovery week until Friday. I am really going to stick to my recovery workouts this week as I can feel the fatigue in my body. This weekend is my last long run and last 6 hr bike. So I want to make it quality workouts. Then the tapering period slowly starts to kick in.

I am in the same boat in terms of wishing the event was now... I can't see myself being any stronger or better prepared in the next 4 weeks and the threat of flu and injury just lurks every time I leave the house!!

Had an epic slow 47km run on Saturday morning around the peninsula, up and over Chappies and the Nek and felt really good with absolutely no stiffness in the legs or any niggles lingering.

Made me a bit less apprehensive about Oceans and IM.... Are they going to be doing rolling starts at the swim?

Yes, its a rolling start this year.  However with a full field of participants I don't see this having too much effect on the bunching on the cycle leg. Just to many people in too small a stretch of tar.

Stress fracture in the foot - ahhh the joys of training. No more running for me - only swimming and bit of cycling...

**** ou, good luck. Not running is not necessarily a bad thing though so look on the up side

Finally got some proper training done the last 4 days.

Did my first ride on the TT bike on Saturday (170km) and it hurt big time!! Need some more of that or going to die on the day..

Worried also that swim wise I am not getting the distance sessions done and running max distance was 27..mostly doing 21/22 k runs as long run.

One last big push this weekend hopefully and then just some quality work left to do.

How you guys doing??

I am down to swimming and spinning the bike with the odd 10km thrown in...

Two Oceans on Saturday and then just sweating, elevating the heart rate and lots of time in Silvermine dam.

Also, a hell of a lot of avoiding people, social gatherings, sneezes, sniffles, shaking people's hands etc..... two handfuls of multi vitamins and anti sick meds a day!

Looking forward to it now. I am where I am and that won't change in 2 and a half weeks.

Swimming going well, nothing to worry about there. Cycling going ok, I should be good to go there too, nothing spectacular but will plod along. The run is my concern, again like 2015 a lil knee niggle has appeared which is mostly due to over use really but I have to do the hours so its a bit of a catch 22. Will taper properly and hopefully avoid the knee nightmare of last year.

what will be will be, I am in far better shape and condition than a year ago, all things being equal I should have a good event. But lets see on the conditions on the day :)

Looking forward to it, its going to rock.

Hopefully the run will go a bit better this year. As a mtbiker, my run will always suck, but funnily enough this year things feel a bit better. Did a 30km run over the weekend at 6min/km and wasn't completely shattered afterwards. Not really sure what changed from prior years. Maybe just the body starting to get used to this running thing. ^_^
