your choice but go off-road loose it on a drop-off i'd still want the helmet as a precaution.

i do agree if a motorist hits you it could be their fault or yours but rather than trying to pass the buck and say they should have seen me it's a simple precautionary intervention that may or may not save your life, it sure as hell won't save your legs from the roller but rather safe than sorry.

but all this is just opinion based.

Well I agree with him. Bought a mountain bike in 1993 and only bought a helmet in 1998. Ever since I bought the dam thing I keep hitting it on the ground and have to buy replacements. Prior to that I fell just as much but for some reason never bumped my head once.Go figure.

I will wear one for racing and proper training but not for ambling around with a camera as I sometimes do

To be clear - no-one is saying don't wear a helmet. But legislating helmet use under all circumstances (even a short trip to the shop) is the start of a slippery slope towards discouraging cycling to the benefit of non-cyclists (mostly cars).

I know this is an old topic and sorry if I'm preaching to the converted, but Snob wrote such an eloquent piece on the topic I could not help but post it.

To be honest bikesnob is mostly a huge dick and posts sensational stuff just to get views.

Personally I dont ride my bike at all without a helmet so whether its law or not doesnt make a difference to me.

Wearing a helmet is like wearing a seatbelt. You're a knob if you don't. No problem with any mandated helmet wearing but given the problems law enforcement seem to have enforcing the simplest of traffic rules, it would be like putting an asbestos plaster on the Hindenburg.

I think you can correlate levels of obesity or some other health issue rising after introduction of helmet laws for some countries. But this is just correlation as I think problems of inactivity go deeper than wearing a helmet.

As good as some people look riding without a helmet (think the Dutch), I think its crazy NOT to wear one with the driver mentality here (either entitled prick or wilfully ignorant), even for 10 min commute.
