Just come back down from Rhodes Mem and there is a lot of smoke about. View from my back garden seems to be there the forest somewhere between Newlands and PP is on fire.

I can see it from my balcony, it does look contained though. I heard helicopters earlier and I can see what might be fire trucks up there... Did you see any on your way back down? I hope we're not losing another trail...

This whole thing is almost starting to look targeted.. :-(

Well, seeing as all the fires have been confirmed as arson, according to the papers.

It is at the top South corner of UCT and on the tar road to Rhodes memorial. It seems like mostly a grass fire. There are many fire fighters and several water tenders on it. (It is less than 1 kilometre from the Wildfire base in Newlands.) Because it is very accessible, they should be able to stop it . There is however quite a strong breeze blowing. Lets hope for the best. It starting next to the road, makes it most likely a human idiocy.

Pic 1: Where there is a Unimog, all will be OK (love those things almost as dearly as a Landy)

Pic 2; Newlands Ravine in the background, to give location and scale

You can see them working on the road where one of our single tracks start (left of the pole), but no, I don't think Rhodes is in any serious trouble.  Come to think of it, that's ironic, given the unhappiness about him over the past month :D

Is that the new downhill single track that leads to the gate at the bottom (start of the tar climb)?

I wanted to do a few loops there this afternoon...

It is the one that runs obliquely down from the level tar road across the open grassy slope and ends up at the top of the old Zoo (very near the lower gate).

That's where I was doing my time this morning. Haven't ridden that bit by the zoo as I didn't know if it was an actual track or not and am usually on the MP single track to the gate.

Stupidly thought it was a good ideas to try a couple of loops taking in going up PP. That is a very average hill. I'd forgotten how much I don't like it.

On another tack that 'dh' from the block house they put in from the epic is looking even more ragged. Almost every one I saw today was either walking it or dragging the back break the whole way.

Anyway, back to the fire. Great work from the fire service once to be right next to Newlands base, love the unimog (still have that on my car list), Cheers for checking it out and giving the update DJR.

Might see some of you up there tomorrow am.

Hope the fire's out

Sell all....take a couple of years off and disappear into the sunset with this one

This is what it looks like today, from above the burn. No great harm done. They managed to keep it away from the trees and UCT. The pole in this picture is the same one in the above picture.

Thanks for the updates DJR  The afternoon treks out to that side of the mountain have been worth the effort ...Can't Begin to imagine what we would do if that side got closed as-well.

not one for conspiracy theories...But Tokai trails...Jonkeshoek trails and now the Devils peak trails...
