Epic near death

Rode past the rider whilst medics were busy with CPR, it was a horrible thing to see!

Suddenly my fall the day before resulting in a fractured collar bone seemed very minor.

Also saw the rider who broke his neck/back on Plum pudding, not nice at all!

I hope all 3 riders are ok.

On the Prologue of all days! You must've ridden on painkillers?

Sorry as per usual my posts are confusing

I fractured collar bone on the thursday, the next 3 days required pain killers , but they were prescribed by a Dr. No anti inflammatory meds.

I must say, my minor incident left me extremely impressed with the medical support at the race.

So as Sasol have a involvement in the Epic someone thought it would be a great idea to have the Sasol rally car lead out the pro's through the neutral sections of the Epic. Now the story gets weird.Apparantly the rally car can't go below 50km/h or it begins to stall. So you have the position on stage 1 where the car goes 60km/h and starts dropping the A bunch then slows down and starts cutting out pissing off the riders who then come round the stalling rally car. This unfortunately happened as you enter Grabouw over the concrete bridge wide enough for 1 car.Rally car stalls,A bunch starts going round rally car, some guy mid pack A bunch connect with concrete bridge re arranging his face.Yes there was a lot of blood everywhere.

Check out this clip around 8 - 9 minutes in. The rally car does get in the way of some of the front guys, but it doesn't stall at the bridge...

The guy on the prologue broke 2 bones in his neck and 4 in his back, discharged a week later from hospital and bike hasn't been sold yet so looking good!

The first crash happened a few groups in front of me as the medics was already at the bridge when we got there.

The second one happened a few riders in front of me. It happened on a flat wide gravel road a few km's from the start, must have been a touch of wheels. As I rode past the guy, all I heard was screaming and his partner waving frantically for someone to help. When we passed another rider said all he saw was a hell of a lot of blood, and that was only a few seconds after the crash!

At the end of the stage we heard from someone that the guy passed away, but later another guy who's partner also crashed mentioned that he saw this guy at the hospital and he was OK.

Strange that the organisers never mention anything about these things. Probably doesn't want any bad publicity.

By the sounds of it its good publicity due to fantastic medical support?

Entry fee money well spent :whistling:

Hope its all true that the guys are ok and recovering

Howzit all, my friend was involved in the accident on day 5. The gentleman who got injured rode past my friend and clipped his handle bars. The injured gent was from the Czech Republic. The handle bars hit him in the abdomen and ruptured an artery. They were resuscitating him When I passed him in batch G and they were in F. Worst scene I have scene in my life. Nonetheless news has come via my friend that he passed away last night. Freak accident and could happen on a social ride but disappointed by the lack of transparency from the Epic.
