chain jumping when under pressure!?

Been riding my SS for a few weeks now...took it out for a hard ride last night.noticed the chain become slightly loose.which is not uncommon.however while pulling away hard at a robot the chain jumped and I pulled an unwilling endo, was able to bring it under control but don't want it happening again.the axel position appeared to be the same through out..

I'm using a QR skewer at the back. I hear a bolt system is better but that I need to change my hub. ..I'd like to avoid this. What are my options?

What kind of frame?

Using a tensioner (I assume not)

sounds like you are running without chain tugs (used to tension the chain by pressing small bolts against the frame)

May be chain line, could also be a burred sprocket.

Speaking of sprockets, are you using SS specific sprocket, or a dis-assembled casette sprocket?

Single speed chain and a surly on the back. ..front chain ring was picked up from hunter cycles, but not certain if single speed specific. ..All the teeth appear to be in good nick!

Only thing I can think of is chain line, but then again, I aint no expert

Was advised to switch from an alloy skewer to a steel one....tried this out on my commute today and the chain was still under tension at the end. ...apparently the alloy gives way a little under pressure.....Thanks for help

Bringing this topic up again since the given answers didn't solve the problem.

I bought a rapide singlespeed kit, with singlespeed specific chain, tensioner and cog. Everything is new so I can rule out a worn drive terrian.

When I put down pressure on the crank the chain slips over the cog. I've cleaned the chain and there is no stiff links. The chain line is also right. Any other suggestions of what could cause the problem?

Perhaps the chain is too long/insufficient chain tension?

This man is correct.

I had the same issue when my chain was 1 link too long back when I built my SS, took out a link and the problem was solved.

Been happy days since then for a few thousand km's

Thanks fixed it. The problem seems to be not enough chain wrap around the cog.

So I shortened the chain and changed the tensioner around so it pushes the chain up instead of pulling down. No problems since.

Is that still the rapide tensioner that pushes up?

I have a gusset chain tension and cannot for the life of me find the right springs in order for it to push up

Can the cog fit on the axle both ways, could be that the cog is on backwards. I had this problem on my 16T with the 1x10 conversion. Could not put any pressure on the chain, swapped it around and it was perfect.

I was advised by an old timer that the skewer needs to have bumps (like you see when they are new) at the contact points on both sides with the frame. If for some reason these become smooth, then the skewer will slip.

Yes still the same tensioner, I changed nothing just bolted it on and swing it the orher way round. I Had no problems since.
