MTB shoes vs Road shoes

Hi guys

I mostly ride my MTB and have a nice set of First Ascent MTB shoes. I have a road bike but hardly use it, maybe once a year when I practice and ride the Argus. I have the same MTB Shimano pedals on my road bike.

Is it worth buying road shoes and pedals, will it really make a big difference?

If you are trying to make your way up the alphabet soup and really want to give it a go in road races then get road shoes. If not then it is perfectly fine to just use your MTB shoes. By the sounds of it you don't ride enough road to justify such an expense.

Just put a set of MTB pedals on your road bike and use your MTB shoes. It doesn't sound like you ride your road bike enough to justify the expense of road shoes and pedals.

I did this with my road bike with no issues and I've used my road bike more than I thought I would.

I put shimano mtb pedals on all my bikes, tri, road, mtb and spinning bike, I use one shoe for all never had any problems, makes life easier.

And cost effective.

Spending between R800 to R3000 on a pair of road shoes as well as an additional expense on a set if road pedals is a no brainier!!!

Lighter shoes means less effort up hills and faster acceleration. They improve your ballet skills once off the bike and walking/dancing to the beer tent for a post race brew.

Road pedals are more aerodynamic and a wider platform gives you better energy transfer.

So the total savings in weight and effort will remove around 27 seconds off your odd 100km race.

Could spend it on a weekend away with family OR shave a few seconds off your argus time to put you from 2354th position up to 2327th.

Invest wisely.

Especially cost effective when you have spent peanuts on 4 bikes

?.......give me a break

Well not all of us can buy 4 different pairs of shoes for 4 different purposes which are all cycle related. Happy birthday to those who are able to do it.

I have about 40 or 50 pairs of shoes. No problem owning a few pairs of cycling shoes. However if I was doing one road race a year I would most likely not bother with owning a road bike at all. Actually when I used to do just the 94 every year I didn't own a road bike.

What I'm saying is if you see sense in owning a road bike when you do little road riding why not go for and match it with road shoes you will also hardly ever use.
