Thank you Nicolai for posting this here and thank you to everyone for the responses and support. To those that traced the reg no. – thank you hugely; your help is greatly appreciated. I am terribly disappointed (understatement - I feel like I've been punched in the stomach) that the reg plate came up as false. I had a very bad feeling that that may be the case as he looked like the type of person who was used to hurting people and breaking the law. The only other identifying feature that I can give is the car might still be missing the side mirror cover (on the right side of the car). Andre approached the driver’s side of the car after he managed to get on his feet (still very disoriented and dizzy) to ask the man what he was doing – the man did not respond, he kept his window closed and just sped off nearly knocking me over as I was retrieving Andre’s bike. Andre held on the side mirror to prevent being driven over as the driver sped off and the cover came off in his hands. The attacker was a middle-aged black man with glasses, smartly dressed. Andre got a very good look at him so he may be able to provide a more detailed description. Andre suffered multiple bruises and grazing from the attack but he thankfully managed to avoid going under the wheel of the car. His brand new bike was badly damaged and is as yet uninsured as we were still in the process of getting insurance quotes at the time of the attack and had not yet finalized anything.

To clarify yes, we did of course report the attack. Several race marshals arrived within a minute or two after the man had sped off and one of the marshals even saw the guy drive off. He did not chase the driver as his first concern was that Andre was attended to. I ran down the road (once I had checked on Andre and pulled his damaged bike out from under the vehicle) and flagged down two metro cops. We made a full report with the cops and have a case number - it now sits with the Wierda Park police station (Constable ML Mokgohloa is now handling the case). We have not heard anything back from the police as yet - let alone the organizers of the race as they have not bothered to contact us despite at least 5 marshals arriving on the scene after the first marshal radioed for the medics.

Please if anyone was driving past and may have witnessed the attack please could you get in touch with me. Also there were some cyclists a way behind us that stopped to check if we were ok – I was in such a state at the time that I did not manage to get your name or contact details or find out exactly what you witnessed - please could you contact me on my email soniaphillips@gmail.com. Justice need to be served.

Data dot from mirror cover?

*very* clever thought that. If the car had data dot then the mirror cover should have a bunch of them.

Should be the best bet. Very popular on the more expensive cars.

Sorry to say, but don't hold your breath for results.

If he's gonna replace that mirror cover with an original BMW might ask for the vin number...police should follow up on the sale of said covers in the next few days...apologies if mentioned. .☺

Police will say they have bigger cases to solve. I can not arrange the detail but I will make a decent contribution towards a PI to get someone to take a bit of punishment for the **** we as cyclists have to deal with daily. I am sure there will be others that agree. I am to scared to ride in some races in this geknelde land....

That is a good idea and I am pretty sure it has been compulsory on pretty much all cars in SA since about 2013. If you have the part send me PM I know both. The Datadot and Veridot guys quite well. Most police stations have microdot scanners as well.

Thanks for taking the time to post up the details Sonia! This must be an unbelievable experience to live and still find yourself trying to make sense of!

Glad to hear Andre is not severly injured from this attack!

Hoping that somehow you get some useful info to make justice happen!

Hello kind people, yes we do still have the cover! What a relief, at least there is still some hope. Both Andre and I are overwhelmingly grateful for everyone’s support and most useful advice. Thanks to you compassionate people we still have a chance of resolving this ordeal and hopefully, for once, aren't just forced to helplessly take the abuse of these sorts of violent aggressors without any consequences.

We will keep everyone posted with any developments.
