So here's a nice Friday question (seeing as tomorrow's a Saturday):

Why all the hate for Gwinn?  He is without a shadow of doubt the best racer on this earth right now and I don't see anyone touching him for the remainder of the season.  He's 27 years old with 12 wins already and although people undergo massive doldrums in their careers, I reckon the 17 wins record will be his to miss.

I strongly suspect people resent him for his faith.  Why?  Yes he is a bit in your face with it, but that is how he expresses his faith.  He is being honest and "real" about it.  The man is a genius on the bike and from what I've seen off the bike a class act.  But because he points to the sky after he wins he gets flamed?

I suspect that is why.

I think that the people who have issues with other peoples faith in isolation, are in the minority.

The issue is the in your face portion of the equation.

On topic, WHAT a run though. Wasn't there a guy a few years back who also got a podium without a chain?

I think it's because he doesn't kiss the podium girls... They seem to know to avoid him, well she did yesterday anyway...

I'll only be really impressed when Gwinn wins at Cascades without a chain.

Nah, that was incredible, what a legend. I didn't even know about the Father God thing until I saw it listed as his special ability on Red Bull. I don't think it's him being religious as much as being in your face about it when winning then. It always feels a bit distasteful when an athlete thanks God for taking time out of not helping all the victims of natural disaster to come help them win.

(Disclaimer: not getting into a religious debate, just commenting on the way it is perceived by mass audience when you see athletes thanking a higher power after they've won something)

The major gripe from me is that by displaying it THAT blatantly is akin to saying that he'd won cos God favoured him above all the other Christians / atheists / Muslims and ordained that he be possessed of all that talent.

What about the other guys? Did God just pick HIM over everyone else?

Prize douche. But a flippin talented one.

I would like to believe that some of the North American venom directed at him is a legacy of the less than amicable move from Trek to Spez a few seasons back.

All other indifference could plausibly be his status as an American – and the first one in quite some time – to best the Euros and Antipodeans. Truth be told, though, his status is excellent for the sport of DH, which was in dire need of an American (note, not Canadian) rekindling of public interest.

Agreed. I think the sky pointing is just an easy target to attack him for.

If he was a good guy, he could point at the sky until the second coming and no one would give a rats ass.

What about when he doesn't win? Is that also because of god?

Imagine the conundrum that god must go through when two guys pray equally hard before a race. Does he flip a coin? Maybes thats what happened with the Lions vs Stormers draw...?

Exactly!

That's my point though. His douchebaggery is easy to attack simply because he assigns his success to a higher power. Not his hours spent working on his fitness, or his race prep, or his mechanic eaking out extra grams on his bike.

It's all cos I'm a good Christian. Better than all the other Christians.

The only unseen power that he can thank for his performance is gravity!

Keep your comments to stuff you know or understand about - you have absolutely no idea why he did that, nor do I know why you made this comment.  The facelessness of the screen allows us to say stuff we might not have said had we known more.

read Herod's account

HUH?

If you don't know why El Captian made his comment, maybe shouldn't comment on his comment because you don't understand it, like you said he must not do...
