Tubeless Tyre lossing pressure

I recently had a tubeless conversion done on my new bike that came with the following wheel set.

DT Swiss X1700 rims

Continental Mountain King front tyre.

Continental Xking rear tyre.

The front tyre goes from nearly 3 bar to flat in about 3 hours. The rear is a bit better but is flat in about 12-16 hours.

I placed both tyres in a shallow bath and cannot see any leakage coming from the valve an and rim area. However, I do notice small bubbles developing all over the side walls of the tyre when its under water which indicates to me that it leaking out slowly out the side walls.

My question is, has anyone else experienced such a drastic loss in pressure from these tyres, and is there anything else I should be checking for ?. If it is leaking out the sidewall, how do you resolve the issue ?.

Iv had tubeless done on my previous bike that had Maxxis Crossmarks on, and those tyres could go weeks without loosing any pressure.

Cheers

Yes, This is quite common.

Have you gone for a ride yet?

Sometimes it takes a lekker ride to move the sealant around to close all those holes.

At a bare minimum, you should take the wheels off the frame and spin them like mad.

Make sure to turn them on their sides whilst spinning to move the sealant around.

This SHOULD resolve the issue.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have noticed that the problem is not as drastic after I have been for a ride. Pumped them to 2.5 bar at 8.30am today and they still seem to be fine.

The conversion was only done last week and iv only ridden twice since so ill just monitor it over the next few rides.

Did you use enough sealant?

I had a LBS shop do it for me as I'm a bit ham fisted with tech stuff. I can hear that there is sealant in the tyre but I'm not sure the exact amount sadly. if the problem doesn't get much better after a few rides ill get them to put a bit more in.

Had the same issue; was super leaky sidewalls as indicated above.

Just take wheel off, spin a bunch and leave on side overnight. Flip wheel and repeat. If really porous, this consumes a lot of sealant so you may need to top up after.

I tried all of the above my my Conti's, still leaked. Eventually I was so gatvol that I just bought tubes with slime in them. 1000km further, still same pressure (this is for my 26er).

For my 29er, I have Maxxis on.

Common problem with conti protect . Plenty sealant and don,t leave the tyre standing for to long .Use it or lose it !

My girlfriends bike has been standing for a while and I actually forgot about the sealant in the tyres. It sounds like sand now...

Also had the problem with the Conti's protection tyre, leaking through the sidewalls. Was frustrated and just wanted to throw them away. As said above plenty sealant and frequent riding (my opinion to get the sidewalls somewhat flexiable). Eventually they will seal mine did after 2 months. My other problem with these tyres is that they do not seal permanently to the rim. Twice now when I had a flat I needed a compressor to re-inflate as the tyres separted from the rim.

follow the procedure from 4:00 in the vid, leave it on the bucket for a few hours on each side.

This works, you may have to repeat a few times and possibly over a few days but eventually they will seal. Perhaps make sure you have double the sealant in the tyre to help the process.

Maybe next time think twice about buying continental, paying R700 for a tubeless tyre that can be near impossible to seal is not fair value for money, even if they are nice tyres in terms of the tread etc.

I'm hijacking this thread as its kinda related.

Notice my back wheel was flat, when pumping it up, sealant leaking out badly..is this something that just needs time to settle or is it pokey?
