Not sure if this is the right forum..and I remember some discussion about this before..but here goes anyway

My daughter needs to do a school project over the holidays and since we both a bit cycling mad its logical (:P) to do something cycling related.

So...we have decided to "test"  natural chain lubes against manufactured chain lubes..and see what results we get. The end result is to determine cost vs performance vs practicality

so..to get a head start, who has used a natural chain lube before and what did you use?

How would you "test" the lube ? (have a idea but open to suggestions)

Hi, I bought a bottle of "green lube"( I cant remember the actual name, Will check for you) and iv had no problems except one issue. After iv lubed my chain the dogs smell this stuff and start licking my chain. Otherwise once its working I cant tell the difference between the other lube I use.

On testing I would say noise, durability to water and maybe how long between lubes. On my training/commuting mtb that mainly rides on the road and pavement I usually need to lube every 2 or 3 weeks but on my race mtb I wash and lube after every race so i'm not sure how long it would last in race conditions.

Thank LWB..the name of the product will def help

Maybe i should use dog attraction (or resistance) as an additional side effect :P :)

Resistance to water is a good test to add. Thanks

Yes, I use a natural chain lube - it's called oil. The Saudis pump it out of the ground and I put it on my chain.

I use this very same stuff.

Considering the price of oil I wish I had some Saudi relatives!

When you say natural chain lubes, I think of trying thing like bees wax (not a lube as such :P)

Bees Wax is on the list

Note to self : Remove bee prior to application :P

You could contact the guy from Ener-B on the HUB, he loves honey! Sure he will sort you out!

And that's how the fight started....

it would be nice if she could also do some research on chain degreasers/cleaners as well

This could then end up as a thesis and not a holiday project

Only in Grade 7 ..lets save Thesis for later :P :)

While you are at it, please add Citronella oil to it, so it smells nice and keeps the bugs away.... Thank me later when they collect the Nobel prize for Natural creativity..
