Cycling on highways?

Which bit is incorrectly marked? From the on/off ramps with the R512 back towards Muldersdrift, which is yellow, or north-eastwards towards Diepsloot, which is orange?

From the on/off ramps with the R512 back towards Muldersdrift, which is yellow is wrong. It should be orange because it is freeway till Muldersdrift.

A following vehicle on a highway where the vehicle is taking up motorway space is stupid.

Quite a few cyclists use the N4 between Montana and Hornsnek.

I only took up road cycling a few months ago. MTB is awesome, as I ride on whatever surface is presented. Obviously not the same on a road bike...

Anyway, to my South is the city of Pretoria, to the Norfff are narrow roads with soft shoulders. I also went twice on the N4 looking for some open road and a wide shoulder and fewer chucked beer bottles. I know I'm not supposed to be there, and had a little fright at an off-ramp.

So what would people actually suggest as a "safe" route? I'm not keen on the freeway, but then where to?

I was thinking about this while out riding on Sat and personally think places like the craddle with cycle lanes as well as places like SBR are the best and safest options.

Fortunately for me SBR is on my back door

The cradle is a 60km drive for me...

Sorry for my ignorance, but SBR?

i've cycled on national highways a few times, but it was touring and not training...

first time was a 10km stretch just north of Uniondale on the N9.  We were bike touring through the baviaanskloof and there ain't no other road to take you from the top of the kloof to Avontuur / Prins Alfred Pas.

second time was the same day going from the east of Knysna (close toe Noetzie) to buffelsbaai where we finished our trip.

Think I also landed up on the N9 for a short while touring around Graaff Reinet at some stage, and where I live in Musina I sometimes cycle the N1 for a short stretch as there aren't any other roads to cycle up here.  The other roads are arguably even more dangerous both because of illegal immigrants and the other roads are very narrow and twisty.

I guess you can only enforce the "no riding on freeways" rule if alternatives cycle safe routes exist.

I'm going to ride on the M1 this coming Sunday. Will get on at woodmead around 06h00 and get off a few km down the road. I think i'll then get back on and off in town somewhere and I sommer think i'll ride on the wrong side of the road.

And from Muldersdrift SW to PineHaven - bottom of Hillsnacks - presumably isn't freeway? Now I know to look out for the blue freeway sign, I'll have to check next time.....

The regional/national/metro does not tell you if it is freeway or not. According the the traffic act, the way to tell is if the road is freeway or not, is if it is sign posted as such.  From the definitions section of the act:

The R59 is signed as a free way between Meyerton and Joburg. Here is a streeview of such a sign: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-26.4166758,28.0752756,3a,75y,349.77h,59.52t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJPVokWUn0p7LsaI4rzBG5g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Another way to tell is on google maps, freeways are orange. Non freeways are yellow/white. However this is not always accurate, e.g. The N14 in the Muldersdrift area is marked incorrectly.

According to google maps, The N2 is freeway up to Somerset west. (Here is the sign that marks the freeway end: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-34.0820428,18.8266672,3a,75y,140.6h,67.14t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sxGhiJZ8OpjLM4JxShIf4MQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)

East of Somerset west is not freeway, so these guys not breaking the law.

Thanks for the clarification

Yhea. I did a "Submit Feedback" on google maps for this issue, and now it has been corrected.

What if you ride on the dirt next to the road? The reason I am asking is next month I plan to ride from my home in Stellenbosch to our holiday house on the West Coast. This means 3km next to the N7. I do plan to go on my MTB so riding on the dirt next to the road will not be a problem for me. Just hope it is not a problem for anyone else - including the law.

Hello,

I become very frustrated when I see this sort of stupidity. This was taken on the N14 between Beyers and Krugersdorp. There are also signs that say no bicycles and pedestrians. On top of this, these cyclists think that it is safe to be so close to this truck, they not only putting their own lives in danger but are placing the truck driver at huge risk.

Please can cyclists become responsible!!

"Please can cyclists become responsible!!"

Mr one hit wonder.

Let's first clean up MOTORISTS before we clean up cyclist.

Two wrongs one right.  Whatever.  I hear you.....

My old saying.....bitching about cyclist on a cyclist website will be like......ummm...bitching about motorist on a motorist website.  Not going to get anything accomplished.

If you can't do something there and then about it, leave it.

I can, on ANY given day, post around 40-60 (I count them regularly on my boring morning rides) incidents about motorist not obeying the law.  Cellphone talking, red light skipping, speeding.  On average, one per minute of commuting.  Will posting pics of them on a website help?  Nope.

All one can hope for is that their stupidity will most likely kill them sooner or later.

Works well with motorists........Saw a guy totalled his nice Audi by skipping a red light the other day.......Can't say that I did not crack a little smile.....

I saw a dad and his kid cycling on the N7. Each on a 30K road bike, wearing a Tour de France jersey. I thought of pulling over and spray paint ALLEZ ALLEZ on the road. Absolutely cooked.
