Advice needed regarding correct MTB size

Hi guys,

So I did the bike fit at the shop and it turns out you were right...I'm a medium.

I was recently introduced to TITAN's Expert bike, which is more or less in the same price range as the Silverback Sola 4. I have no experience in either one of these two bikes and would greatly appreciate any comments from the more experienced riders regarding these bikes.

Cheers.

Dupi

Component wise the Silverback looks better, Silverback also have excellent back up.

I'm 1.78m and my first 29er was a Sola4. The LBS convinced me to take the medium(in stock) and they even put a 110mm stem on to make it fit me. I felt cramped right from the start and eventually took the bike back and traded it in on a Sola3 in large. The bike fit me perfect and felt right.

The Sola4 has an air fork. What fork is on the Titan?

Hi Bullet,

It seems they both have the exact same fork, i.e. SUNTOUR XCR AIR.

Run... And NEVER return to that LBS...

Fit problems are not solved by fitting out of proportion bike components. Pi$$es me off when bike shops do this just to sell the stock they have!

Silverback has probably the best aftersales service in the business. The Hub is full of compliments.

I've never heard anything bad of Titan.

Cool, thanks for all your replies guys.

Seems that at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference...

Hey guys,

After some serious homework I decided that my first mountain bike should be a Silverback Sola 4. So that leaves me with one last decision to make…and it seems that it might be the most important one to get right…namely bike size.

Keeping in mind that I’m a total newby, the two most basic measurements to consider seem to be the actual height of the rider as well as inseam length (standover height). I took these two measurements and they are as follow:

  • Height – 1.75m
  • Inseam length – 0.80m

According to most charts this translates to a medium size bike. I do however seem to be on the border between medium and large, which somewhat complicates my decision. I would therefore greatly appreciate your opinions and recommendations regarding this matter.

Looking forward to your reply.

Cheers

You'll fit best on the Medium.

Your inseam is not very long for your height. If you go for the Large it will have less standover clearance and you'll need that since being a newby you're going to be dabbiing (putting your feet on the ground when the going gets rough) and spending some time portaging.

The top tube should see you comfortable with around a 90mm stem.

Best bet is to get the bike shop you're buying from to fit you but I tend to be sceptical about bikes shops desire customers correctly when there is the potential to loose a sale because they don't have the right size in stock.

Inseem and height is not the only things to consider when sizing a bike.

Everything works together.

To give you an idea of what is involved you can look at www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp

I used that recently to size my girlfriend for a bike. Based on her height everybody was saying she needs to be on a small. Did the calculations and the tipping point was on small/medium.

We chose to go for the AM/Trail fit and she is on a medium with a 50mm stem and wider bars. Bike fits her comfortably even though it looks to be too big for her.

Like I said. Everything works together.

I've tried the fit calculator from competitive cyclist and was also recommended I go with a small. I reckon I must have mismeasured something terribly, because my preference is for a very long medium e.g. Mondraker, or generally large otherwise. With a sample size of 1 failure from CC I imagine it was a slight issue of PEBKAC

no, it's because they use stupid stem sizes. Have a look at the number that comes out of the "recommended" stem length. Madness, I tell you. Absolute madness.

True but you can pick riding style which helps a bit. It's close but not perfect.

Effective top tube recommended for the gf was at 22.5" and the bike is 23". Stem compensated perfectly for it.

Everything does work together but there is always one constraining dimension that sways the fit either way medium or large.

In the ops case it could very well be the inseam and therefore standover height comes into play

Stem length is a function of all other fit criteria being met
