I like the idea of a back back/hydration pack with an intergrated chest protector. Maybe a zip one. Hopefully someone is taking note.

I think leat have somthing similar

The A Stars Evo jacket is exactly that...

I see. But thats more like an undergarment and no place for some spares. Where as the bag allows you to carry some extras or not

It has 2x roadie style pockets out back for tubes and so on, but on a longer day out you are definitely going to need a pack too...

I am off to race in the Alps for 6 days in about 3 weeks time at this event ...

http://trans-savoie.com/

Its billed as being more technically challenging than just about anything and on a par with the EWS. Its very steep and rocky in places and I foresee lost of opportunities for mishaps. I don't want to end up injured early on and have to battle on carrying wounds I could have avoided had I been wearing some chest and shoulder protection.

I already have  FF helmet, knee guards and elbow guards and my back pack does quite well as a back protector. I am thinking of a chest/back/shoulder protector. I see Alpine stars make a very enduro style jacket that even allows a bladder to be carried over the back protector. There are other 3df jackets from Leatt but these strike me as being a little more Moto than bike. I will have to pedal up about 1000 m a day in addition to the 4-5000 m descending so something that breathes a bit will be good...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I ENVY you !! Enjoy the trip ! Please create a thread and post reviews and pictures!!

Leatt have their 3df airfit vest - very light and thin ie breathable material but still level 2 back and chest and some kidney protection. Zip up with side straps and integrates with a Leatt neck brace.

Leatt pricing is better here than overseas ( like 1/3 cheaper)

They're a local company, that's why.

Based in Contermanskloof, just to the left in that big industrial park as you get to the 3 way stop...

Still VERY good pricing for the quality

i have also been looking at getting some upper body protection after i went OTB at avalanche and broke 2 ribs, been looking at getting a set of these:

http://www.2ndgearstore.co.za/product/fly-roost-gaurd-convertible-ii/

looks like they can have the shoulder pads, etc removed as needed. where can i find the leatt stuff online, any ideas?

You can check the stuff here, http://www.leatt.com

Then ask The Bike Shed to get it from them for you.. http://www.thebike-shed.co.za

Edit.. They are around the corner from each other, unfortunately we can't go to Leatt directly..

I'm considering the same. Took a few tree scrapes on shuttle day over the weekend and my shoulders are still burning out the shower. Nothing major. But its the close call I had with a tree that I keep thinking about. Just don't like to be weight down and I don't wanna invest in something that proves to be cumbersome and I end up not wearing it anymore. I like the alpinestars roost

This is the EVS roost guard. Its minimalist protection I know but its what I'm leaning towards

There's always gonna be a compromise. But I'd say this thing is fine for climbing.

I just realized any suggestions are useless unless you can get your hands on them in a week. Possibility of buying one over there? Check which stores are close to where you'll be. Check their websites or make a call or 2. Who knows. It might save you some dough and packing space

Most of the Leatt stuff is available immediately. The Airfit vest is light and easy to pack for transportation... Those bulky hardshell jobs are great if you are just shuttling but for a whole day out I think something soft and comfy will be a better bet...
