More aggressive tyres for Gauteng

So I'm looking at getting a more grippy front tyre for my Anthem 29er. Currently running the Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph combo in snakeskin versions.

Just not mighty confident in the Ron on the front, have had alot of drifting with it here in the dusty/rocky dry terrain we have here in Gauteng. Typical places like van Gaalens/Hakahana and all other "custom" routes around Harties with similar terrain.

So I've done a bit of research and looking at the following tyres (would not like something that weighs more than 850g per tyre):

  • Purgatory 2.3 (sound like the tyre does not have a stable sidewall, even though the Wide Lightnings might have to counter that?), Butcher maybe seems overkill.
  • Hans Dampf (heavy?)
  • Maxxis options, Minion ?

Mainly looking for something in the front, I'm happy with the back stepping out here and there and do not need more than a Racing Ralph/Rocket Ron at the back for now.

I have the Hans Dampf and they great for Cape conditions. Perhaps a bit heavy and they suck onto tar (sounds like a land rover), but one can't get the grin off your face downhills.

High Roller 2s are awesome as front tires for that terrain, very aggressive compared to your current combo, and very similar to the onza Ibex. Have you had a look at the new nobby nics, might be a little less extreme

Get RR Nobby Nic or conti X -king .Both will work .Maxxis ardent also ,but they are heavy

Try WTB Wolverines / Weirwolf.

GREAT tyre for Gauteng - they used them at the Hakahana endure day with success.

Trailhead stocks them, IIRC

Ive got a Purgatory on the front with a ground control on the rear, decent combo in my opinion.

Not the lightest but rather that than fiddle with punctures and worry about a lack of grip when I need it.

Just put a set of Wolverines on my SSR (2.3 front and 2.2 back) will see how they go ....

I went a bit OTT on the front with Conti X-king 2.4s on AC Wide Lightnin wheels. Trying to find extra grip in the hard packed sandy sections at Modders. Almost looks like a mini fat bike

I use Wolverines 2.0 on the rear. I prefer the back to give before the front!

At 1.5Bar on the front the grip is pretty impressive on a general XC type route. I think the Wide Lightnins help a tad...

WTB Trailboss

I have one as a rear tyre on the SS, and I found the grip of the trailboss to be superior to the wolverine.

I have also run the tyres with too low pressure, and has never had a impact puncture.

Took a spez for s testride around delta for a couple of laps, and the fastracks were drifting like a 325is on a sunday night. Was not impressed at all.

I don't know much about tyres, but after reading a lot of comments on The Hub, I fitted my Anthem with Maxxis Ikon up front and Crossmarks at the rear. I did about 130km's with them this weekend, and I must say they are quite a bit faster than the Geax Saguaro's I had on.

The tyres also feel lighter than the Geax tyres. I'm happy.

I think if you want more grip at the back, the Ardent's would be a better choice.

Nobby Nic also a better option in front. We have them in 2.25 and 2.35 Snakeskin in stock...
