Sinus and Hay-fever

I had bad hayfever around spring every year in the Cape til a pharmacist told me to take Texa allergy tablets and kick start it by using Flomist for a few days too. But I am not sure about long term. I take texa allergy tablets every few weeks usually the night before a race as otherwise I find I spend the first half of the race coughing up phlegm.

Good thread - the racing angle is tricky - I brought this up with the Doctor a couple of times with their reply being "Are you good enough to get tested" - fair comment but not good enough for me!

Got a lot of chirps at Rooiberg this weekend from cameramen and spectators for riding with a buff over my mouth and nose - it helped a lot with the dust and asthma (not as good as a proper filter, but way less air resistance too)

I use Flomist, you can get it from Clicks pharmacy without a script. My sinusitis is bad, in 2013 I took antibiotics about 9 times because of sinusitis. I had an operation many years ago, it doesn't make much difference. The Flomist is a cortisone based spray you use once a day. Very low doses. It is also quite cheap.

and you can use it chronically, ie on a .long-term basis.

often prescribed for asthma sufferers.

new generation nose meds (acc to my chemist) - works very well.

I am off the chronic nose meds for a while to try sort my nasal issues out...we'll see how that goes.

Yip, I do that too - riding with a buff DEFINITELY helps with the asthma / allergies.

And you look like a cowboy on the way to rob a stagecoach...

Get yourself tested to identify what causes the allergic reactions.  Then try to avoid it.  if it is dust or pollen that causes the allergy, Texa is very good at controlling it.  you can take it as cronic medicine.  i have been taking Texa for more than 10 years with no side effects - take it just before you go to bed.

when you have the post nasal and sore throat the solution is a course of celestimine tablets. within hours the drip has dried up and you can perform at peak levels again.

you need a script unfortunately but the high level of cortisone in the tabs does the business!!!!

Yes, 100%. I take Flomist every day. I found if you start taking it when you are already sick, it doesn't work. Start if you are feeling OK. Then don't stop.

It seems to be dust related. Where do you go to test what you're allergic to?

Start at your GP, he will no the best direction

Somewhat related I also have questions regarding my chest closing up post ride (sometimes a bit during a ride) and causing some coughing - sometimes into the night and next morning - like today...

So what do I need to do about this - should I see my GP? I have heard about exercise induced asthma and I also have bad sinus issue with change of season and so forth.

Suppose it is all related? Will a GP prescribe an inhaler that's not doping? Anything over the counter available for this?

I constantly need to blow my nose when riding, during the day with normal activities it is less. Do you think this will stop it? Because I am really tired of carrying a hanky with me on all rides!

Hanky = unessesary weight. Just like the excess snot. Blow it out BUT ONLY FROM THE BACK OR SIDE OF THE GROUP. NOT ONTO/INTO OTHER RIDERS!!!!!!
