Morning fellow Comrades. After all my stress I ended up having a great weekend...well the second half anyway. Woke up Saturday with an itchy throat and fatigued and thought my run on Sunday was done. Spent the day horizontal and relaxed - put some honey down the throat and went to sleep with 2 Corenza's C's. Woke up Sunday feeling great and with perfect windless overcast weather. Course was flattish (400m elevation) and fast. All the hills were long and gradual, so you ran them at the same pace as the flats. Ended up running a PB for myself and just missing out on a B batch - 3:22.10 to be exact. The general consensus was however that the course was long - I recorded 43.05km and my garmin told me my mararthon time was 3:17:42....so I will claim that as my PB and stick with my C batch for comrades....after all its on Strava so it must be right!

Good morning all,

Seems after the flu and injury etc. I'm fighting an uphill battle for my first downrun (see what I did there  ;) )

I went on a short, 6.5km, run this morning and felt like I was starting all over again. Have I left it too late and should I offer my entry for substitution, giving it to someone who's put in the required work and wait for next year, or should I hang in there and take a chance?

What are the odds of making it happen for 2016?

how long you been off? and what was your base before your time off?. March and April is where it really counts. You can still put in a solid 600km in those two months. At the end of the day - you can run a comrades on 600 - 800km training - just means your day will be long

My base was pretty good, mixed it up with some swimming and some MTB, it just seems a lot further away now. 600km doesn't seem like too much effort, and I was kind of expecting a long day anyway, so if it can be done, the dream is still alive

The more experienced guys on here will give you better advice...but zero junk miles training and you can still prepare yourself adequately. focus on some intervals and/or hill repeats one day during the week and then take your long runs slowly to start with...even if it involves some walking. I reckon it wont take long to feel comfortable on the legs again

I did Comrades in 2014 on less than 500kms

It's not clever, but it's certainly doable

3h17 is a great run, Well Done

Super annoying when the Organisers cant use a simple GPS device to get the race distance correct. 800m is a massive difference, almost a whole Pinetown detour... haha

Deloitte was also about 250-300m long, no major train smash but surely its not that hard to get it right.

thanks - I am super chuffed...not in your league..but really lekker for me. I wont deny that i was pushing for the Sub 3:20 at the end and my legs are feeling it today.

I am not too bothered by the distance - according to my calcs the second lap was about 300m longer than the first lap...so if the first was slightly long then that would make it a 400m - 500m error...but hey - lets not quibble over a few metres...it was a superbly well run event - and i got a PB! lol

I suspect that the watch type gps devices are not as accurate as the methods that the organisers would use. My other half ran a marathon in Spain recently which was an official Rio Olympic marathon qualifying event and certified to be 42'195 m in length, her gps watch recorded the race distance as 43'110 m

Even though she was a +/- 250 m behind the start line and did not follow the "racing line" (shortest route) I doubt she ran almost 910m further

I really don't mind over distance to a point... What gets me if these people complaining about not qualifying and blaming it on distance when they only have themselves to blame for being so close to the cutoff... Bit if extra work and it becomes a non issue.... If you struggling to make 5 hours in a marathon... Comrades is going to be very difficult

The old comrades runners will tell you about the time when marathon qualifying time used to be 41/2 Hrs and the comrades cut off 11 hrs
