I also like Lindsey's program. But with the new coach I am using, his approach is Quality over Quantity. I will still run my Long 40km+ runs on weekends, but the midweek is a bit different. I now have to rest 2 days instead of just 1. I didn't really like it because it felt like I am not doing enough, but I di feel stronger and the proof is in the pudding come Comrades Day.

We have two rest days per week, after some hectic weeks even a third day.   We will be incorporating stretching, mobility and strenght on those days.

Nothing to bite... we're all on the same team here  :D

I always have something to bite, we should be upping the bites with this comrades training.   Nutrition is as important as running!  ;)

Was'nt arguing, we are on the same team.

That was the one aspect that I thought about your plan.  I was told the guide is not to increase much more than 10% per week and not exceed your weeks mileage with your long run on the weekend by much?

My 0.14 cents, Jaco, Comrades Virgin!

Sorry, looking at this years Program from Linsday, it's actually way more my cup of tea... there used to be very little in the way of rest days. I guess I should of judged on the current one

That Old Mutual one though still just has a single rest day, and some funny ideas in my view - but yeah - do what works for you and your schedule

Your plan actually sounds a bit similar to mine excluding the squash day

This is exactly my thinking/plan - just on a smaller less grand scale

Sure hope it pays off on the day

Hav'nt seen any squash since my knee scope 7 years back.  LOVED it...

Regardless of the programe, the one thing that I am incorporating is ever single hill I can find in Bloem. :cursing:   I'm not going to look back at this and say, why did I only run flat routes...

I work with a guy that is a multiple comrades finisher (20) and at most he runs around 600 kays between jan 1 and comrades day. I guess the concept of quality over quantity is more important than we realize.

I'll bite as well (same side). I've been following the thread since day one, but not really the vocal type...

The thing that stands out to me is the 20. That body could be so conditioned that his case would fall towards the extremities of normal. Not to mention genes and ability. And yes, the quality argument is obviously a strong one, but I do think there is a balancing point that would differ for each runner.

As a noob I'll walk a couple of times between DBN & PMB on Lindsey's guidance and quite a couple of kays before pulling a stunt like that.

I ran 1300km in 2015 from Jan to May before Comrades and 1000km in 2016 (mainly due to not feeling well in Jan and Feb). I didn't feel the 300km difference in 2016. I still felt strong to the end.

I agree with quality over quantity ( I started reading "Run less, Run faster" by Bill Pierce. 2 days cross training, 3 days running and 2 days rest)

Rest is so important. I used to have one rest day per week in the past, I am now changing to two rest days a week. (Strava is not helping... I feel guilty if everyone is running, and then I probably end up going for a run :whistling: )

So my advice for ultra run novices:

  • Join a club, there are runners with lots of experience. ( and they love to talk about running)
  • Greet fellow runners and chat to other runners at races. You motivate each other while suffering together.
  • Get a training buddy (I didn't have one for my first Comrades and I regret it ever training alone)
  • Be thankful for the good runs, don't feel discouraged about the bad ones. We all have them.
  • Sort your eating habits/ fueling strategy out on long runs. You need to get to know your body before a race. Don't try anything new on race day.
  • Run without your watch now and again... Just run, no pressure about splits etc.
  • Listen to your body - You might do more damage when you are ill, have an injury or are just plain tired.

Happy running this weekend everybody!

You can swop me any day. Its extremely flat here. Have to drive about 1h to run a route with some decent hills

Suffer fest for me today. No rhythm an no motivation. 12 minutes slower than last year too even though I been training loads. Log book run not a record book run

Dischem?

Sometimes we have those days.. Don't stress... Next week I'm going to miss my usual litmus test 21k... But it's still early days... Plenty of time to build endurance and strength

Can one only get a Championchip from the outlets on their website or is there any other store ?

I tried Cycle Lab - Fourways a couple of times but they have no stock.

I am in Roodepoort / Vanderbijl area.

Funny thing is I felt good at the start but guess life is like that. Take the good with the bad.

Whenever there is a event timed by them at the number collection point ere will be a guy or gal selling them.. Iirc it's around 150 bucks and its yrs for life never having to make another purchase again. If you do numerous different events there are a number of different timing agents so you end up with 3 or 4 at then end of the day. Racetec is another as an example.
