I am starting to get some serious sweaty palms and wondering what got into me having gone for a last leg loosener this morning before Saturday's... first marathon for me.

Don't want to burn too many matches and have real trouble finishing. There'll be trouble enough without me setting off like Ferret... not that I can run his pace if I wanted to! ScottCM 1

TheJ Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Are there any newbies contemplating doing the down run?Are there any experienced runners who can help the novices out with trying to balance riding and running training without loosing your family? You can safely just replace some riding sessions with running sessions. Trust me, running will improve your riding, even if you ride less. So, no more time needed. Just run instead of ride. That's my opinion.
SeaBee Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Okay, I did not break any land speed records. But I did it! First marathon, DONE! Stuck to the plan I had and ran well within myself. Then at about the 19-20k's I was still feeling fine when I just suddenly felt my calf shout out. Same spot I injured the week before the tunnel run. And then I ended walking the last 2 k's home on a 34k run. Went slower, but it was the hilly section of the race, where the calf will be tested. Saw the 4:15 bus pass, waved them goodbye and thought I'm not even going to bother, from here on finishing is the aim. I think that decision saved the day. Just tried not to worry too much about it, keep it steady and keep going. Got to the turn on SSW bridge feeling good, but for the legs. Went through the hill up to 30k's passing a lot of people to my surprise, had a good stop there, banana piece and coke lekker rustig. But the rise into the gravel road was a killer for a sore calf - and by that time some compensation points started throwing notices as well. Just walked that bit and went on as soon as it flattened out a bit. Next water stop got a quick rub on the calf and strangely after that, I just could not get going again. maybe it was the standing still whilst they were rubbing, maybe it was the unknown territory for my legs. Got home and my legs were very sore, they did not want to cooperate. But - I never felt that completely drained feeling I was expecting, the body felt good, just the legs that were shot. Last k - I simply could not stop grinning inside! Strangely enough I commented to my wife yesterday that I was tired, but my legs were actually feeling better and less sore than after the Tunnel Run. I just might try this again... Now - how long do you guys lay off after a marathon? I did a recovery ride yesterday and was thinking of not doing any running at least till Wednesday or Thursday - and then only very short and light - and flat! Calf is better, some perdesalf, compression, rolling and anti-inflammotories sorted it out. Fortunately not serious, just knotting up at the top of the calf, joining the knee. I did a recovery ride yesterday and was thinking of not doing any running at least till Wednesday or Thursday - and then only very short and light - and flat! Calf is better, some perdesalf, compression, rolling and anti-inflammotories sorted it out. Fortunately not serious, just knotting up at the top of the calf, joining the knee. I normally rest on the monday and take a slow recovery run on the tuesday...but then it depends on what the end goal is and how your body is feeling.

Barry Stuart Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Glock and Radman, are you guys in? I'm up to 40km a week now but not enough long, slow runs. Still haven't done a half this year. I think I'll target a December half to see how I feel and if I'm strong I'll have a crack at the Johnsson Crane marathon. I'll have to base my decision on how that goes. If I can sub 4 a marathon and feel like I haven't left it all out on the road then I think I'll have a go. Sportsworld.co.za 1

Having already qualified at the Cape Town Marathon in September, I was treating this as a long training run to get some quality distance in the legs after a few quiet months since then. Getting out to Stellenbosch for the 05h30 start meant a very early wake up call, but it was well worth it for a very well organized race with plenty of undulating hills from about 15km onwards. My goal was to average about 6 mins/km, saving my legs on the uphills and not getting too carried away down the other side, so all went according to plan and a thoroughly enjoyable day out in Stellenbosch. I like to use races as some of my longer training runs, so I plan on doing 1 or 2 more this year but mostly resting up before ramping up the mileage again in January.

I'm doing the Cherry Festival 23km Mountain race this weekend for a bit of a change and to get ready for the Lesotho Ultra Trail 38km Next Saturday.. Should be fun, anyone lese going to be in Fiksburg or Lesotho?
ahmedbadat Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 hey guys so who did tough one yesterday? was my first had no idea it as so difficult, you just climb and climb and climb, with one or two very sharp decents which were very steep, nevertheless had so much fun suffering in the race and finished in 2:56 which im really happy about as i havnt trained much at all, best thing is i got two medals for completing both 94.7 and tough one, and i got a sub 6hour combined time next il try for a 5.45 combined time over the two events. will definately be back for this race.
Hacc Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I finished my second tough one... and it was true to its name, 550m of elevation... The wind was nice and cool and really helped, but the fun only starts at around km 17... I was aiming for a sub 3 but realised at 22 km this is not going to happen. I had terrible stomach cramps. I finished in 3:12, a bit faster than last year. The tough one is a good race to finish the season of races. I will be increasing my kilometres now, probably around 50 to 60 km a week up to the end of December. I was very sore yesterday and still today... felt like a marathon and not just a 32 km.
