I was actually looking for that bike, because of the powerband statistic - It had to have 14 gears because it only produced max power between 19,500 and 20,000 rpm, which is just insane. You were constantly shifting to keep it in that range. Launch off the line took place at a staggering 18,000 rpm. I wish someone would build this sort of motor with modern technology.

What's also amazing about those gearboxes and engines for that matter, is the scale, those gears are tiny and perfect.

Barry Sheene rode a one off 250 with 17 gears if my (often faulty) memory serves me correctly when he was an up and coming racer just before the regulations came in which limited bikes to six gears.

It also had to be launched at 18000 rpm.

 

However reliability was somewhat of an issue...ahem...cough...
