MTB - Saddle Bag or Jersey Pockets?

Saddlebag is on bike so you don`t have to remember to pack spares every time( or avoid standing next to the trail looking like a d**s if you don`t have any) On bike is fine too but I like to be properly prepared so slightly limiting i.m.o.

Pockets are for food and phone only, but I have busted a phone landing on my back and that left a nice bruise so landing on a Co2 bomb or multitool could cause serious damage as others have posted.

I have also landed on my back with a camelback and I reckon it actually protected me from serious harm but it all depends how you land i suppose.

Saddle bag  ... a lot easier to change between bikes and I'm always sure I have everything. No rattling when neatly and tightly packed.

This is currently creating another issue... had 2 bottles on my XTC and now with the Anthem only have one... so I either put another bottle in the jersey pocket or I need to get a seat post bottle cage (which I'm not a fan of as it tends to hit the back tyre)... so have to choose which setup is less irritating. Would love to hear of any other ideas to solve this problem.

Camelbak - I use the bottle for my energy drinks and water on the back - that way I can drink anywhere - even on the single tracks

I've always used a saddle bag, but with DS frame design I had to get a second bottle on my bike. The dropper post meant that I no longer was able to use the seat post clamps for a 2nd bottle cage. I eventually found a workable solution. I reverted to a top tube bag for my spares, phone etc. i have a rather large one for stage races, and a smaller one for shorter rides. post-5386-1440075536,2011.jpgpost-5386-1440075552,7701.jpgpost-5386-1440075567,4621.jpgpost-5386-1440075582,9286.jpg

Saddle bag dangling under your saddle looks like ball sack!  Bombs and tube on your frame, Rest in your pocket.  Done

THIS ^^^

RACE DAY

I tape 2 tyre levers, to Bomb+adapter(i fuse them) then tape them to a tube and velcro strap it to frame

Tape Plug and tool under stem

Multitool + Pump + chain link in back pocket

COMMUTE DAYS

Everything bar tube, which is taped to frame, goes into a toolbox(tightly packed) into my bottlecage

Pump in back pocket

...i'm the one who carries spare's for "friends"

Works perfectly. I use the smaller camelbak bottle as the larger ones do not fit that well in the triangle.

Maybe a question for all the racing snakes.

What is the better solution - having the additional weight on your bike or on your body?

Is there a difference at all?
