I want to try a shorter stem but looking at the ones in the classifieds - 80mm seems to be about the shortest there. What is the shortest available. And why they so expensive?

Never been to a bike fit so this is just a try it out and see if there's any difference.

Is there a general rule /ratio/measure without a bike fit? (Weekend warrior here)

Can I put any brand on?

I can DIY this? Assume level 0 noob.

Any other thoughts, considerations, no don't do its?

Here are some lessons from the master, try to get his book, and read it,

Boys learn to lift their front wheels around the time they learn their ABCs. They goof

around in front of their homes, tugging and tugging until—voilà—they’ve popped

their very first wheelie.

We have no idea what the girls were doing at this time (our wives were hanging

with Barbie), but most of them missed the wheelie lesson.

Uni, if you are too stretched out on your bike then your shoulders and upper arms should be getting a bit uncomfortable on long rides (relative to the rest of you). This would be sign of a frame too big or stem too long and a shorter stem could help. Also if you are stretched out then it is harder to shift your weight back on the bike.

So try a shorter stem if you want to. My LBS has a few old spares that they loan out so riders can test different lengths before committing to a purchase.....

:) Alcohol works too. Friend did a scorpion while mildly ( Read pissed outa his mind) inebriated. Basicly small hill with large speed and he somehow managed to smack down hard. Looked epic tho!

I just fitted a 30mm mtb stem to my road bike. So they do come pretty short. In my research I didn't see a shorter one. The shortest I saw here was 60mm, anything shorter, you have to look overseas. I can't speak for if it helps lift the front or not.
