Advice please - Anti-Biotics & Racing

I accidentally posted this in another thread, so just posting it here.

So Bela Bela 5150 tomorrow. Woke up with s swollen gland under my left jaw, first thought it was mumps, doctor luckily excluded that. Just a swollen gland, might be an infection.

Now my question, I'm not in any discomfort, it's not sore, I don't have fever or flu like symptoms, my resting HR is comfortable at 50bpm. I feel 100% great.

He prescribed Amoclan bid anti-biotics (amoxyllin&clavulanic acid) and hit me with a voltaren and cortizone injection.

So Doc mentioned I should play it by ear, if the swelling has cleared up a bit by tomorrow morning I'm good to go for the race. If my condition is worse, or any fever / flu like symptoms creep up then obviously I wouldn't partake.

Second opinion from another Doc also cleared me for the race.

My question, is it really a good idea to start taking the Anti-Biotic now, shouldn't I wait until Sunday? I'm scared it will affect my HR during the race? Or would this specific kind not affect, and would in fact help the infection subside?

My doctor told me that it is very rare that the medication will stop you from riding or affect your performance (at least no more than the condition it is treating), MOST important according to him is how you feel.

I would however go with what your doctor told you .... surely the sooner you start taking the medication the quicker the problem will start to heal?

Or maybe I'm just rambling on a bit, sorry if I am ....

you stating amoxyllin rang a bell - the last time i was sick with chronic sinusitis, my doc prescribed that and specifically told me that strenuous exercise is a no because of the potential for tendon damage.......

a google search yields results for  amoxicillin and potential temporal tendonitis.

i don't know if they are different or you just spelt incorrectly, but i would look deeper into it.

I would take after the race

If you are feeling ok in the morning, race.  Think you said on the other thread this is your first 5150 so you are unlikely to be pushing hard as you do not know your limits... if you are feeling fine tomorrow, race, aim to finish and enjoy the race

Last will and testament - check, yes

As long as all your affairs are up to date and no one important in your life will miss you should something really tragic happen (hope not)

Then go for it

Worst case scenario, but think about it....

There is a specific class of anti-biotics associated with Tendon issues - Fluoroquinolones - if the AB prescribed is in this class, then I would just change the AB, or take it easy (probably a good idea anyway) while taking the AB.

I am not aware of amoxicilin being associated with tendon damage.

Thanks for the education.

Thanks for everyone's feedback and advice. I did take the AB on Friday and it definitely helped. I managed to compete and had an awesome race. The AB not affecting my HR at all.

Great race, great event, can't wait for next year.
