any way to undo a dodgy buy?

hi hubbers.

I bought a bike and am really happy with the purchase. the bike itself is everything i wanted and paid for. The deal included a set of sram wheels however for an extra 5k. The seller raised a concern about the wheels, when i asked what was wrong with them, he said one of them needed a spoke. I agreed to have them repaired at my own cost, didn't try negotiating down or anything. everything was agreed and the exchange was made without a hitch. when i did manage to get the wheels to the bike shop, i was told they were unrepairable. basically 5k paperweights. when i tried contacting the seller, at first he totally ignored me, and eventually when he did reply, he agreed it had nothing to do with him, and it was my problem now.

is there any way to get money back without dragging his name through the mud? i'm even willing to trade the wheels for something else to the same value. the thing is, I'm doing this to raise funds for an orphanage and really cannot afford to be throwing away 5k. any help will be appreciated.

Hi

If it was me, I would refund your bucks on principle.

He knew there was damage to the wheel, I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt. But SRAM wheels ain't cheap, so the fact he didn't fix them raises some questions.

How long did it take you to discover they weren't repairable?

I took them in the day after i picked them up from the courrier, and the bike shop called me 3 days later.

I was under the impression most people on here would. is why i tried contacting him to get the wheels back to him. I guess i shouldn't be so gullable, lesson learned. I won't be buying without seeing the items in the future

If you purchased them off the forum send him this link.

Give him a day or 2 before you name and shame him [emoji6][emoji6]

Why are they irreparable/unrepairable?

Forgive me spelling...

Yes agreed, he should atleast assist or refund, but...

You strongs on not wanting to drag he's name in the mud!

What type of rims, are, is it just 1 spoke or rim, give more details? If its a carbon repair although not advisable it can be fixed, if aluminium damage, can't you get replacement rim only keep spokes and hubs... Bottom line, it may not be a complete wasted 5k?

Flame suit on..

Speaking in general here as I don't know the specifics of this particular incident.

One of the reasons I won't buy anything expensive second hand privately, where I have little recourse.

There's most definitely dodgy chancers out there, but there's also people that are genuinely unaware of defects, or unaware of the extent of the defect of the thing they're selling.

Then there's also the risk the seller has, not knowing if damage occurred after the sale. I know voetstoots only applies if the seller knows of a problem and doesn't disclose it.

If you're buying without the knowledge to check something yourself is it not worth putting in a condition of purchase, have someone in the know check it out before the sale is finalized.

Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware.

Appears seller is trying to pull a fast one, big diffs between selling a wheel that needs a spoke replaced and selling wheels that are worthless.

Bike shops might not be keen to send carbon wheels for repair, I suppose if something goes wrong it falls back on them.

There are carbon repair specialists that will do a great job of repairing wheels.

Damn. It's a bugger being ripped, even if the seller is unintentionally oblivious.

Before you hoot and shoot, contact Wayne at Rapide. He is very experienced with wheels and he will certainly give you good advise. Plus, he's in Kensington - your hood.

Am I missing something?  He may have pulled a fast one, but by your own admission....

That said, I wouldn't buy from him.

In my experience as long as the issues are not in the 'braking area' or where it actually 'holds' the tire it is all good .... has anyone had success with that?

Your only real recourse is to take him to small claims court for misrepresentation. Not worth using a lawyer for R5000. It would be your word against his so you'd need to prove your case on the balance of probabilities; sounds straightforward but can prove to be difficult in practice. I had a similar issue and have just written it off. The sums involved aren't worth the time to go to the small claims court. PM me if you want to know more.
