Seat post issue.

Good Day Everyone

I am still new to MTB and have learned that my seat should be in a position so that my legs complete a walking cycle and not bending too much.

Been riding like that for almost a year now and my seat post has bent slightly backwards. My seat post is also a bit too short so my legs are not fully extending.

This issue seems easy to solve, get a new seat post, but why did my current one bend in the first place? Is it just not strong enough or am I to heavy ?

I don't want to buy a new one and then it also bends.

Any help on this please.....

Forgive me for making this suggestion but sometimes people can overlook the simplest things. Are you sure you're not just riding a setback seatpost all this time and maybe only noticing it now? I find it unlikely that you can 'bend' it without cracking the frames seat tube first. Still I've seen weirder things. Post some pics and lets have a look.

This is my seat post, and yes it has bent. My bike is a medium, measured the frame size to be 43.50cm. maybe a smaller medium. I am also about 1.77m tall last I measured.

My seatpost measures at 29.5cm so I think it is a bit short and to have this happen when it is only extended about 25cm is weird or it is bad quality. What I just want to make sure is if there is anything else I am missing.

Thanks guys

looks to me that your post was extended out way past the minimum mark. Having the post extended 25cm and its total length is only 29.5cm is a huge gamble. Where is the minimum insert mark on the seatpost?

Go get a longer seat post and make sure it's inserted enough. Most seat posts have a physical mark on them with minimum insertion.

Take back to lbs if they see it up like this. Definitely their responsibility.

I stand corrected. Jeez you lucky I must say. That you didn't get hurt number one and the your bike is still in one piece. Anyways looks like you dodged a bullet. Its far too short. Generally you want at least 80mm (preferably 100mm) of post inside your seat tube. Not the same for all bikes and posts but generally speaking anything less than that is not considered safe. Get a new post.

17inch is correct for someone of your length, even up to 18inch. If im correct you riding a titan which has a very sharp sloped top tube. You actually lucky the seat tube did not crack or the post for that fact. Get a 400mm seat post and you will be sorted. Also just make sure your seat is not offset and that its straight on the post that you not getting pushed forward as this also adds pressure to the seatpost

Wow thanks guys, I see that I went about 2cm off the min extended mark. Did not even know about this, see my profile says newbie

According to physics and torque it will bend no matter how much is left but I suppose that this could only handle a certain amount.

Any recommendations for a new seat post? I am still new so don't want to pay too much.

As for my bike frame it measures 43.5cm and that's a medium if I am correct and I fit on it perfectly, I think.

Thanks man, this bike is actually a Raleigh 650b, don't yet know if it is a good make for MTB.

My suggestion would be to get the 400mm seat post now from the guys who sold the bike to you, and get them to check the frame thoroughly, i'm actually quite surprised your frame hasn't cracked already...

I'm 178cm on an 18" frame. My seatpost is extended to it's max length, but that was done by the bike shop that set me up.

Get a longer seatpost, but also get a setup, or at least a bike fit. Also surprised your frame didn't crack. The Raleigh bike is fine, the make of it has nothing to do with your bent seatpost. I'd actually keep that frame, 'cause if it didn't crack with that, I'm guessing no amount of punishment will....
