20 cm is almost a hands length from the seat tube where I would have imagine most of the stress from normal riding would be?

Carbon layup normally thicker near the joints and tapering somewhat as you move away from them. So yeah, the top tube could be more vulnerable at some distance from the joints if a strong rider is putting some power into the pedals.

When standing and pushing hard you tend to also push away on the bar to get more leverage. Can see how this would apply torque to a bike's top tube and potentially cause a lateral (across the tube) crack if there was a weak spot.

Overclamping a top tube in a rack or workstand would tend to crush the tube causing a longitudinal crack, wouldn't it?

This (cracking tubes) is what happens when frame designers use carbon to mimic steel tubes..... Can of worms now officially open. Carbon is not used to best advantage in tubular form, but that's another issue.

I would assume carbon has a strong tensile strength but an average torsional strength.

Flexibility when done right can overcome lower torsional properties.

I've been here for a while and I am reluctant to complain about something because of what the complainer gets subjected too.

Only if your alleged claim is not substantiated

It was his first post. I'm sure he is not aware of the stringent criteria we have on complaint ;)

I'm suggesting that the hub encourage proactive engagement rather than chase people away before they are comfortable with posting here on a regular basis, that's all.

Not defending his post, questioning our reaction to it ;)

OP if you are still following the thread and have bike insurance, just go that route and save yourself alot of effort( just check your clauses, but any good insurance will have you covered). Just take the report from Scott to the insurance company and get a new bike (not a Scott).
