OK, it took quite a bit longer than planned, but today was the day. I've had it with gears (flame suit on). I rode SS for a good 20 km today, with a geared (1x9) bike, so what the hell.

In my QFR (Quest For Reliability) I have decided to finally take the plunge. Busy ordering the SS stuff right now. Here's the steed which is to be freed from gears:

Starting with 32 x 18 and will see how it goes. I'll post a few pics when the conversion is complete.

I'd love a "real" SS frame, but with the laaitie going to university I will have to wait a bit.

If those are flat pedals i suggest cleats for SS riding so you can use the pulling action of the hamstring,s better .

I just checked the ST-R on Momsen's site................ looks like straight steerer? I just went through a mission and a half to get a tapered steerer Niner fork.  (Maybe Johann Rissik wants to swap forks? :P

Definately can use a tapered steerer fork on the momsen - no issues at all, although my mate had to do a small bit of filing on his Chinese carbon fork steerer to get it to not rub the frame inside the steerer tube (ok - I did it, but not even 0.5mm, really just excess resin)

Cleats on a SS ? Might as well put a suspension fork on as well then .

I hear what you are saying, but I am a flat pedal guy. Trapping around in my 5.10 Camp Fours. They stick like crazy, and when I need to hike or trudge, they are super for that too.

I took the plunge and ordered this:

No chain tensioner required!

Always funny/interesting how one's SS build/dream/plan/project always runs away with you!

Happens to me . . .  always.

Good purchase.

I presume you'll build over the stuff from your current bike? Enjoy!!

hahahaha That is rad.

Also, don't hate on a SS with suspension forks. I have a 650b Mercer with 160mm forks on which I ran SS for a couple years....

It's for fun. There is no right or wrong way, as long as it makes you smile

Hey Jewbacca,

as long as it makes you smile

Agreed 100%!!!

No hate here towards suspension forks. My reason for going rigid fork - my QFR (Quest for Reliability). I want to eliminate any and all things that might go wrong, as much as I can of course. Hence the SS route.

I stay out in the sticks, so when something does go wrong, it usually becomes an ordeal to (eventually) get the bike to a shop etc. Basically I want a bike that is ride-able 24/7, 7 days per week, with the minimum amount of tweaking/fixing/maintenance required.

I started out on a Bridgestone MB-1 back in 1993 and rode it for many years. Still slapping myself for ever selling that bike. So, to get back on a rigid fork wasn't really anything unusual for me. In fact, it made me feel right at home :P

So, before I decided to go the SS route, I was contemplating a 1 x 11 drive train upgrade (SLX for around R4,600).

For a bit less than that, I got the following:

- 32T Rapidé SingleMinded® NW Ultralight Ring - R499.00
- 18T Rapidé SingleMinded® Singlespeed Cog - R129.00
- YBN MK918N Single Speed Chain - R189.00
- Rapidé Single Chainring Bolt Set of 5 - R179.00
- Rapidé Singlespeed Spacers And Lockring Kit - R129.00
- Momsen ST-R 29 frame - R3,100.00

Total: R4,225.00

No turning back now. Gonna have to MTFU and ride.

Congrats henningvr, you're gonna have a solid build there.

R3100, 00 sounds good for that STR frame, I might have to visit my local Momsen dealer.

IH8MUD - willdo for sure.

BenReaper - I got mine from Cyclosport. Andrew had one L size (white) in stock, so I decided to grab it right away.

Really looking forward to this.
