thankfully all the bike problems are happening a week before... my chain got wedged between the inside of the small chain ring and the crank... now the crank has to come off to get the chain out

Was going to do a final training ride out at Suikerbosrand this morning but woke up with a flaming sore throat. Common sense got the better of me so bike is cleaned, polished and ready.

Vitamins, and hopefully no Dr required, to see me through this week. Last thing I need.

Bike leaves on Tuesday. Kids to the grand folks on Thursday and the plane with me and the Mrs leave on Friday!

Amped!

I would like a locals view WRT the wind on the route this morning.

How bad was it in comparison to normal or what we could expect next Sunday?

Around Muizenberg to Cape Point it was rather rough, but it gets worse that this morning. Atlantic side not too bad.

Next Sunday? Who knows.

Don't let it worry you, there's nothing you can do to change the wind.....but there's plenty you can do to deal with it. Work together, spin, keep aero, pick the side of the road with less wind, close to cuttings, hedges, high walls. Ride smart! Most of all, don't let it get under your skin. Forget about setting personal bests, accept you will be slower than on a quiet day, but if you manage it well, then not by too much. Oh, and keep in mind you have to ride more defensively and stay wide awake in the wind, anticipate the swerving and sudden crazy moves that will happen. Be even more careful than usual to not overlap wheels, you will get switched sooner or later. Ride to get there safely. If you see just 1 crazy idiot in your bunch, get away from him. They cause the crashes. Keep to the front part of the bunch and to the downwind side. Have a way to bail if you are forced. Don't get boxed in, don't get stuck on the nose for too long or on the upwind side. Big balls and attitude also helps with bunch riding in a strong wind.

Wind Wind Wind buddy... all along today

And when you think that it will be behind you when you come around that next bend...

That's when CT weather just presents the next surprise

Typical weather for this time of year

Wind at chapmans peak was insane this morning. That was definitely worse than normal. What I will say though is the wind is not on your face all the time the way the mountain bends. So you get a bit respite.

Other than Chappies it seemed as per usual.

Thanks guys.

I did the section that we missed from last year.most of the ride was solo, overtaking slower riders. the route is a bit rough if you are on your own the whole time, no shelter, just take it on the chin.

The decent from Chappies was INTERESTING to say the least.

I was happy with the ride.

I did enjoy the part past Cape Point, 50+ km/h with little effort.

Looking forward to next Sunday.

Watch out for this one in particular next week.

When there's a tail wind at the top of Smits there's always a long string of people struggling to keep up with the guy in front, and inevitably a gap forms somewhere and I end up trying to bridge the gap (usually unsuccessfully) with my pedals spinning so fast that I can't even think.

But as long as you hit the top of Smits in a good-ish position in the bunch, you and the other people who were left behind can usually catch the front once they hit the uphills after a few kilometres.

don't worry about the wind - there are 35 000 wheels to hide behind

I start 1C, not that many wheels to suck.????

Not that worried about the wind, just from JHB, and wanted a frame of reference.

I would hope for as little wind as possible, to improve chances of sub3.

I believe with today's wind, the possibility of a sub3, is not that great.

Current forecasts look favourable.  Unless it changes substantially you should get a sub 3 without too much trouble, provided everybody stays on their bikes.

That bit just after the top of Smitswinkels, I think, is rather dangerous because it is so extremely fast, people are knackered after climbing, and they are getting thirsty and sore on the bike. So, you always have a few trying to drink, eat and stretch at 55km/h on a very bumpy road.......disaster waiting to happen. Not so much in the front bunches, they know better, but if you are a little further back, beware! Keep hands on bars and cover brakes all the way on that stretch, this is not the place to relax.

New development for weather is 40% chance of rain. It won't hold but can you imagine the fun we would have.

Interesting! I see my guru (wunderground) agrees with you. That will make for a nice quiet day i.t.o. wind. Also, it will mean cool weather. If that's right come next Sunday, it could be a fast one.

I have never gone down Chappies in the wet. Do we slow down a lot?
