Bike Theft: This is ridiculous

I often wonder if bike shops are not in on this.

I was in a Southern Subs bike store recently, and someone came in looking for a pair of "disc brakes" and complained at the pricing.  The store owner (?) said, wait, and came back a minute later from the back with a set of SLX brakes all neatly curled up and two rotors in his hands and said the guy could have them for R800 cash.

Still wondered about this, as I was once offered a set of Mavic Crossmax wheels a few years ago when I went asking for wheels to build my Intense... Also said it had to be cash, was the only reason I never bought them, as seriously WTF carries cash in the 2000's?

EDIT to disclaimer.   I am not saying ALL bike shops.  Just this particular one had my mind racing when seeing this.

Definitely wouldn't be surprised some lbs are in on it. The people in repair industries are perfectly placed to move stolen 2hnd parts, in that respect it wouldn't be unique to the bicycle industry, apparently many cars are stolen solely to be broken up for spare parts.

I always carry cash. In fact I hardly use my card. Had to help a buddy yesterday as we went into one of those corner shops that stocks almost everything under the son. They only deal in cash, no speedpoints.

My folks roll with one of these in Milk Man blue. Its 3l environment murdering diesel 4x4, gets 4  bikes in easily without any wheels coming off. Never had an issue with theft from the thing.

They also have a fortuner now as well but not very impressed with the ability to load bikes in it like the CONDOR. It can get one without wheels coming off.

Nice thing about it is when you trek over some dirt road/rain etc when you get to your location your bike is spotless and even been climate controlled :P

i learnt to drive in one of those in the 90's. not sure when they were discontinued, but GO! magazine did an insert on people carrier cars a few months back - they threw in  second hand condor as an out the box option - they have two as 'company vehicles'., which in this case is 'expedition vehicles'. done loads of kms, over all parts of southern africa.

back to the comparing of bike theft across the world. The UK figures are probably quite accurate, but there's huge differences in what we construe as the 'problem'. the overwhelming majority of those will be commuter bikes. probably worth GBP300, and with incentive schemes even less cash out of owners wallet to acquire. call it $500, which is 0.75% of GDP per capita.

There is definitely a massive problem with those bikes here - a R700 makro special will also need a R700 lock in most places. You would find a whole lot less taxi commuters if low end bike theft wasn't such an issue/deterrent. We're not really discussing this issue on thehub -  we're looking at high end bikes (i would say min cost R5k, but average of stolen bikes is probably R35k, - this is about 25% GDP per capita.

From my limited travels to bike orientated cities, I would still think amsterdam rates as the biggest bike theft issue. to the point that it's a way of life. you get a p.o.s bike, put a massive lock on (and one more on the back wheel)...and just write it off as part of life when it gets nicked.

True. What is also common is that people don't always steal your bike to keep for themselves. Someone might be at point A and needs to get to point B. They have a quick look around, find an unsecured bike and ride it to point B. Once they are there, they dump the bike and off they go. Proper dick move nonetheless.

they have these things as standard.

you leave the key in whilst riding and when you park you pull it out and it spring locks shut. (then you put your chain lock onto the actual bike rack). you have one of these not because it is unbreakable, but because if you have one and someone else in the rack doesn't - his bike goes first.
