Garmin Edge 1000 vs. 810

Shangri la

With the debacle from Polar not writing new drivers to interface the IR unit with Windows 10  I am  following their advice and upgrading my RX800CX to a new GARMIN device.

With multi day events going "self navigate" I do need the map option. Defiantly adds an additional element to the races, having experienced it on Jhb 2 Sea and Sani2C

I am asking all those in the know is the extra R2000.00 between the Edge  810 and 1000  worth it or is the 810 the better option??

Used the 810 for Rift Valley Odyssey in rural Kenya and it performed perfectly.

Easy to use unit, easy to read.

The Garmin PC software is a bit counter-intuitive but you soon get the hang of it.

The 1000 is better but you dont need the maps for events with routes - I have a 510 810 and 1000 and my go to device for mtb is the 510.

For road work the 1000 is pretty good - better than the 810 except for a small sw flaw doing very short intervals - should be fixed shortly I have been told.

810 for me. Unless you are going to link your garmin with there new front light, rear light/radar (back tracker), virb or have Di2 then it's not worth it.

If you're tunning Di2 on any of your bikes, the 1000 displays info regarding what the electronics are up to (I don't think the 810 does, but I stand to be corrected). Other than that, I can't see any major benefit over the 810. That said, if the 520 has just come out as an update to the 510, then I'd assume an 820 is in the pipeline.

If you add the cost of the maps then the 1000 becomes more attractive as the price jump isn't as big. (810 comes without maps, 1000 comes with maps).

But you don't need maps for routing.

For my money I would get the 520. If I had to to chose between buying the 810 And buying the 1000... It would be the 1000.

You can use opensource maps - no need to use the Garmin ones...

But I agee - 1000 vs 810 - the 1000 takes it - but for using on the MTB, I think its too big (this is good if you struggle to see small things like I do) - and there are no features you need beyond the 510 for GPS only races.

As to the choice between the 510 and 520 - I like the touch screen on the 510 - hitting small buttons in the bumps to change display screens is tricky for me - especially with gloves on - just swiping a finger is easier - and quicker - which is useful for swapping between the navigation displays.

Hi. I was force to upgrade my 510 to the 520 after it my 510 broke. My main concern was the little buttons of 520. But I must say I love my new 520. The display looks clear and the button is easy to get use to. I downloaded open street maps on the unit and it works well. I can't see the need for something bigger.
