Do I understand correctly that you need to ride with a map then?

No need to ride with a map, just sit in the bunch (or memorise the route)

With a map and turn by turn instructions, which will be given to you at the registration, and will be available on the web site soon. We will also be publishing a gpx file soon.

As jcza said, it is likely you end up in a bunch that you can just follow, but you should be able to navigate by yourself.

Any further news on this ride. Couple of mates are considering registration. Their main concern is getting lost having never done any rides of this nature before.

Perhaps the experienced guys can provide some tips?

It's a relatively easy route - so if you know the area, it's unlikely you would get lost - and if they provide a .gpx route, then impossible if you have a GPS computer.

Never ride wit empty water bottles if it's a hot day... I have run out with 30k to go to Magaliesburg at about 35 deg or more .... some years ago - was unpleasant...

On the point of support vehicles, the rules state that none are allowed and I suspect that relates to the traditional sense of a support vehicle - ie - the vehicle being in constant close proximity to the riders, however if we have someone meet us at the checkpoints to provide consumables, drinks, spares, etc; would that represent a breach of regulations?

Some updates:

Time to enter has been extended to the 29 November 2015.

Please don't come to collect your brevet card on Saturday. All brevet card must be collected on the morning. We will have much more volunteers on the morning to assist with this, and we have taken steps to streamline the process, so hopefully there won't be long queues.

My tips:

  • Try familiarize yourself with the route as much as possible. Take a look on google street view at the intersections you need to make turns at (as well as the ones you need to go straight at. (You can do this from our interactive map.)
  • Even if you are in a group, check your route sheet when making turns.  Mentally tick off the turns you have made. Check if you bike computers distance matches the route sheet (they can sometimes differ by a small amount, it's good to know by how much.) Look at the distance at which the next turn is. Then you can put the route sheet away, and just watch the distance on the computer.
  • If you have a garmin, load the gpx file on to that. If you have an android phone, install Track Navigator and load the gpx file into that. (I'm sure there is also an app for iPhones that can use a gpx.) Then you you are unsure, you can just check that, and make sure you are still on the line.

That is OK

At control points 2 & 3 there are shops and taps, so you can buy some chow, and fill up your bottles. You can also stop and any of the garages/shops along the route to get supplies. (I normally stop at the Pinehaven Sasol garage for some water when doing this route.)
