Weeping tyre

Similar problem on my son's Rocket Ron Snakeskin Evo 29 er tires. It leaks sealant all over the tread pattern (not sidewall), after a few days the tire is always wet all the way around.

The sealant appears to dry up at the same rate as a non leaky tire (top up every 3 months). Our other tires are similar and they don't have this problem.

I googled the problem and it appears that this can happen with any tire brand.

I agree with the gist of the advice given, basically ignore the problem and keep checking your sealant levels.

i would much rather be burning money on an egde 520 right now ;)

A thought...what about removing the tyre...getting the plug repaired...cleaning out the inside...then replace sealant and pump with a compressor...not worth the hassle???

maybe not such a good idea using these tyres with my weight...i put a lot of stress of the wheels and tyres because i weigh half a ton...i have heard when i upgrade the rims i need to look at rims which can handle my weight...

once again because of the weight...maybe fitting a tube...it would support the tyre wall and wouldnt move as much as it does.

personally I would much rather have the re-assurance of tjoopless than worrying about tjoops but that would be up to you .... cleaning it out would probably make it worse to my mind? At least it has some coating now ....

interesting comment..." the sealant appears dry" i just took my hand and wiped the tyre...it is wet.

The tubeless ready schwalbe tyres supplied with the giant bikes are not really meant for heavy riders in harsh conditions.

That said they are fine for tubeless conversion. When sealing them up you should agitate the mix in the tyre after top up by shaking it vigorously in all directions to get the sealant everywhere. Spinning the tyre very fast isn't always enough.

If using a co2 canister to inflate the tyre you need to ensure the valve is at the top when releasing the co2.

When you expand co2 through a very narrow orifice you create what we call a thermodynamic throttle. Gas expands from high pressure and zero velocity to maximum velocity and very low pressure. This creates a massive drop in temperature which freezes the sealant. By keeping the valve at the top the sealant is half a wheel away and by the time the gas gets to it it would warmer due to friction and absorbing heat from the tyre. Hence the tyre feels cool to touch.

I had the same issue with my Maxxis Crossmarks with Ryder Sealant, ended up opting for tubes until I need to replace them. Tried the topping up option, but that did not work for me either. Tyres kept weeping and going flat. (No dings in my rims either, brand new Bontragers)

Fairly normal. I have same problem with Spez tyres. Two issues at play here:

Most sealants are latex based. The sealant includes ammonia to prevent the latex congealing until it leaks through a puncture and encounters ammonia free air on the outside.

Your bomb uses carbon dioxide which apparently reacts with the ammonia in the sealant......so then the sealant partially congeals inside the tyre and no longer seals so well.

Even without a bomb, the sealant ages and has to be topped up or replaced every 3 to 6 months.

Now we come to the tyres. ' 'Tubeless ready' tyres are those that 'can' be set up tubeless with sealant but are really designed for use with a tube. Sidewalls are thin and get more porous with use due to flexing. The sealant takes care of this....until it is used up or gets old. Every time you pump or bomb the tyre you introduce fresh air / gas which congeals some of the sealant.

many manufacturers now have tyre versions with tougher better sealed sidewalls - Schwalbe snakeskin, Specialized Grid etc. So replace with these when the time comes but don't throw your existing tyres away yet....just put fresh sealant in every time they start to go soft between rides.

You might eventually end up with a big ball of congealed sealant in the tyre... remove and just keep using the tyres till they done....then get better ones.

I have to disagree with this. REMOVE IMMEDIATELY! Leaking sidewalls is not the only problem. The bigggest problem is that if that tyre touches a rock the sidewall will rip open - most times not even pluggable. If you ride alone then keep the dodgy tyres. But too many of my rides have been spoilt by others using the non-snakeskin Scwalbes, you owe it to your fellow riders to at least have tyres that will not rip open at the slight touch of a rock.

Must be a lot of sharp rocks in your part of the world. But fair comment - in attempt to make tyres lighter the manucturers have compromised durability on their lightweight versions.

Not sure what you mean, I think you are misquoting me, check your quotes.

I mean that the slow leak does not mean that I have to top up sealant more frequently inside the tire, the outside of the tire is undoubtedly wet from sealant.

With regards to bombing...i learnt a few quick lesson about punctures...screw on bomb adaptors...if your valve is removable...either you need to make sure it is really tight otherwise when you remove the bomb adaptor the valves unscrews [emoji15]...if you are on your own it gets interesting...trying to hold and stop the *** spraying out the valve...while you unscrew the other piece of the valve from bomb adaptor.

After the the second and last bomb i attempted to inflate the tyre using a hand pump...rather carry 4 bombs...or ride with someone who also carries backups...a hand pump is not even an option unless it is the last desperate attempt once a tube is fitted.

Schwalbe and Continentals have been known to do the same

The funny thing is i normally use tubeless ready schwables and not the snake skin (we don't have sharp rocks or beeg thorns)

About 6 weeks ago my old faithfull rear nobby nic Rocket Ron tubeless ready was looking a bit treadless so i thought i would do the right thing...fit a new snakeskin version (Nobbly Nic Rocket Ron) instead. Well now its still weeping and my last ride after about 3 hrs i could feel it had lost a bit of pressure...

Even stranger my front tyre is now also weeping between the knobs (still a tubeless ready nobby nic that i fitted over a year ago and it never weeped after the initial typical weep for a few days)....

Common denominator is the sealant, Doc Blue (Schwable) which is just Stans in a blue Schwable bottle

The plot thickens

edit: corrected tyre type

That tyre looks kaput.  When my tyres get like that they also start "weeping" from all the small hole  the thorns etc have made previously.

My previous house, the bikes lived in the garage. The garage was extremely hot during summer. Current house, bikes live in spare room which also gets crazy hot, particularly during this past heat wave.

Noticed that in between rides (only a day or two) the tyres lose a lot of pressure. Not weeping but they get much softer than "normal".

Is the heat the culprit?
