helmet selection

Started out using a scott helmet for all my rides...worked fine until the inner bits started to literally fall apart.

So I went looking for the replacement bits...which proved to be a challenge but eventually managed to get them...got rid of the helmet.

A mate of mine was getting rid of a few catlike leaf helmets...i liked so i invested in 2...they comfortable and feel solid...perfect for mtb riding.

I have taken a keen interest in road bikes and spending a lot more time on my road bike than my mtb...and with it comes a few things to consider...

helmets...

road bike cleats...

clothing and even the colour of clothing (if you consider summer is almost here with the heat and humidity in Durban it is hectic) maybe wearing black is not the smartest thing to do.

is using a mtb helmet such a smart idea to do long distances on a road bike? ...i sweat like anything...I noticed the road bike helmets seem to have a lot more holes...i would assume that is for better ventilation.

any suggestions as to which helmet offers a really good flow of air to cool your pip down?

I also noticed lots of the road bike helmets are white.

I may get roasted a bit by some for saying some of these things and it's not following the rules per say. But:

1.cycling gear costs an arm and a leg,use your mtb shoes on the road bike and dont worry about what others think.that can easily save you a few thousand

2.Nothing wrong wearing your catlike helmet on the road,if you want it to have more of a road look,if the visor is removable take that off.also I can't see the helmet colour making as big a difference as the colour of your kit which I feel will have an impact.

3. If you have to get another helmet I was lucky enough to get a specialised s3 as a gift, amazing airflow and extremely comfortable.I had to keep checking it was still there when I first started using it.

All fair and reasonable.

1. what i am doing at the moment...mtb cleats and shoes.

2. been doing this for a while...however looking at the catlike whisper looks like plenty airflow...cooling your head...5 hrs+ on the road...with restricted airflow and a black helmet which attracts the heat...

did notice quite a few people wearing the s3 helmet.

I am looking to make my cycling experience as comfortable as possible...i am not too concerned about the cleats and shoes right now...focusing more on stuff to make it a better cooler experience.

step 1....bib shorts...done...should have done this first...before upgrading my bike...this is the one thing most people complain about when starting out...yet they skimp and buy cheap...then spend the rest of their riding experience complaining about a sore crotch...especially as the rides get longer.

step 2 helmet...to find one...which is light...comfortable and has the best air flow...

this is something that is becoming like the crotch was...in winter it didnt really matter...but as it gets hotter...it is becoming a problem...during the amashova i was gona take the helmet off...i spent most of the time riding with the strap unclipped...only clipped it on the downhills.

step 3 shirt....no a big issue right now but gona look into it soon...

full zip for cooling...vents under the arms and a light colour with a cool fabric...to dissipate sweat...being a fat oke...i sweat like crazy.

One good thing about summer...it gets light earlier...i dont enjoy riding in the dark.

I think you want to spend money on new cycling kit. Just be honest. You are new to cycling and addicted.

Dont worry about being rich because this new habit will make crack cocaine look cheap.

And you are in the company of other addicts so dont ask for help.

My experiences.

1> I started off with MTB shoes/pedals on my road bike. After increasing my distance I started experiencing hot spots, and a few months later I changed to road shoes. I felt a big improvement as the contact area between cleat and pedal was much larger. Some may say this is all in the mind but it worked for me and made my riding more comfortable.

My suggestion - invest in a good pair of carbon soled shoes. I also felt quite a big difference going from cheap Diadora road shoes to Shimano carbon soles.

2> Also started with a MTB helmet, and on the road in the full heat of the day I always had my head heating up. Changed to a Kask Mojito and this sorted out my issues, well vented and very light at 220g.

You have to find what works for you, go shop around and try out helmets and shoes. Research and check out online reviews on the few you like then make your choice.

The S-Works prevail is the best all round piece of kit you can buy!!

Don't worry about road cleats unless you are really really serious. MTB cleats also make for less awkward walk at coffee stops ;)

You will spend more time on your bum, so good bibs are a wise investment. Get a pair of S7s will change your life!

using a black catlike leaf helmet at the moment...very comfortable...i just sweat a lot...so i want to get a lighter colour with better ventilation....really like the catlike whisper...looks like it has plenty of ventilation...also gona look into a lighter colour shirt...just not white.

in a months time i will be stepping up my goals and targets for 2016...i have manged to achieve most of my goals for this year...managed to do 3000 km...200 m to go to reach my target of 40 000 m elev gain...the only challenge at the moment is dropping below 100 kg...just because i havent been eating correctly...bit lazy...i have managed to drop 25 kg so far

have 2 pairs of assos high mileage bibs...love them...if i go below 95 kg...then i certainly will look at the S7 cento bib

in the R2500-3000 bracket, the Kask Mojito seems to come out on top in terms of airflow from the research I did.

Good fitting and does not look like a mushroom on your head. Also has good padding around the helmet so not much an issue with sweat dripping through

I wear a Buff under my helmet all the time to stop sweat running down into my eyes.

Halo also makes a cool headband with a rubber liner to direct sweat away from your eyes. Friend of mine who sweats to such a degree that I won't draft him says it works a charm!

Would still go Sworks prevail though ;)

I have a Prevail (sworks) and thx to Pinot winning that stage during the TDF (thanks Pinot), the Giro Synthe. .I tend to wear the Giro more.. both are lovely helmets.. both super light, will add though that the Prevail keeps my noggen a little bit cooler than the Giro.. but the Giro is cooler.[emoji12]
