Riding on painkillers a bad idea?

Go ask your doc if there's something that you could use. You never know, there may be something that's safe. And drink lots of water.

Metabolically safe still is nota good idea - see above

Painkillers canned my Epic. I pulled a diaphragm muscle on the 2009 event (got me a free hernia). It was painful so I started taking an anti-inflammatory/pain killers that my (former) GP assured me was safe for using when doing extreme sport.

On day six I nearly died, literally (not like the OMO advert lady). My blood pressure spiked over 200 and my kidneys all but shut down.

I went to a Comrades marathon doc after that and he freaked when he heard what over-counter common painkiller had been recommended. Reckons I am lucky my kidneys still work.

Don't do painkillers when doing sport.

Used Tramacet once and spend some time in happy land. Riding would have been a great idea if I had only remembered how to use my feet... the couch was my friend for hours ;)

Not all pain killers work in the same way. Some act centrally (brain) and nearly always slow reaction time and blunt decision making. Tramacet is a good example. Others work on the inflammatory cascade. Voltaren, Brufen etc. They significantly change renal and cardiac function. (Celebrex less so). Like always Panado is the safest. Combine that with Celebrex for the best risk /benefit ratio. If that is not enough you are out.

If you need to take meds for it then you're better off just taking a rest period and sucking up the loss in fitness. To me it's risk v reward and depending on your goals for the 94.7 you have to be realistic about whether or not you'll be able to benefit properly while trying to recover from your injury. All that said plain old rest might be what's needed.

You a VERY lucky man if your kidneys still work properly.... this is a side effect of NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories) usage, and they are extremely dangerous - and I have posted a LOT about  not using them during excercise.

There is only 1 rule - DO NOT use NSAIDS before or during endurance events - and the rule according to me is absolute. NOT - under any circumstances.....

OP - Please publish what you were taking for people to avoid - just because it is available over the counter does not mean it is safe - and just because your GP prescribed it also does not mean it is safe to use during endurance excercise.

I remember Anton Bosman talking about his painkiller use during a 24hr, and how he ended up in hospital - not touched the stuff before or during rides since.

there's a reason why pain is uncomfortable, it's so that your body can tell you when something is wrong...

if the pain is too bad, rest until you can ride again and accept the situation.

if the pain is bearable, drink some concrete and ride without painkillers.

When I still ran, my best runs, where I ran ridiculous times, were at like 4 in the morning - I believe it was because it was cold and I was back home before my legs even knew I was awake so they couldn't protest.

The problem is that you run so fast and hard that you hurt yourself and don't realize it, then after teatime, suddenly getting down the stairs starts hurting.

Point is this (sorry for taking the long road to get there) - pain killers/anti inflams/muscle relaxants will hide just enough pain that you hurt yourself without realizing it, and damage your kidneys in the process.
