Great thread OP.

I agree, all these okes who are just good at riding fast up a hill or riding fast down a hill should get banned from these events.

If you cant be good at everything why bother in the first place?

I thought long about this in the bath lastnight.

It is my duty to hold you up on the single track, here is why.

If I hold you up on the single track and you start the next climb behind me or some other noob dirt roadie, I would have pulled a big enough gap that you would be free to race down the next single track without you catching me again. You are happy.

If I let you past, I will just pass you again half way up the next hill and you will get stuck behind me in the following single track, this is an infinite cycle of pass/blocking and won't end until some sleeveless hairy legged hulk throws a tantrum or gnarls it past by cutting a switchback Kevin styles or we finish the stage with us skidding the rear wheels in anger like a gang of 80s American school kids wanting to beat up Marty McFly. Nobody is happy.

So for the greater good, I cannot let you past. Sorry, I am sure you understand.

Be honest... Were you using this in the bath...?

What is amazing is that most can't understand that different people ride events for entirely different reasons. Some do not have the time available to commit to 10 plus hours a week to get their fitness up ahead of events to compete along flats and climbs to get into the front third of the field to enjoy somewhat unbroken single track riding on the courses, yet have the legs to get through the event and ride routes that are not open to ride at any other time.

What is this constant misnomer about "get stronger and beat them to the single track, or just ride their speed and wait" k-u-k... As you say, no one is going to get prize money behind the winners, but everyone has the opportunity to get miles of smiles, if they allow each of the crew to get their jollies off in the way they would like to from the event! Less fit, technically able fat bastards are FAR more accomodating to mid pick skinny racer types on the flat and climb sections than the other way round on descents whether it's single track or jeep track along those sections!

But that doesn't give you the same bragging rights as ending 12th in C-batch at a Trailseeker race. There could be scouts and sponsors watching, y'know.

Maybe then the real solution is to up the prize money for all categories. That will motivate everyone to ride faster...

Cue "Why is everyone racing for time rather than just enjoying races these days?" thread...

It comes down to the same thing every time, can't commit to get fit or loose weight, so OTHERS must work on their skills to make my race more enjoyable

Nought, how about everyone goes as they are and leave a little space for people to get by in the areas they know they will suck...

Props to those who do self improvement. Especially Escapee who is upping her humour too!

Some riders push uphill, some push over roots and rocks. To improve on the one takes tits, the other ballas.

So that explains why it's sometime referred to as "breasting a hill".

After reading some comments, I think I'll stay away from races until I attend 15 skills clinics and get ST Certified by the TBMBC Generals...

That won't suffice. You need to get SVEN LAUER Certified as well.

it's quite sad really, the general vibe of comments on this thread that "my riding style is all that matters" and that there is no point in trying to have a meaningful discussion on how to get a few hundred people to enjoy a trail at the same time.  perhaps mtb has become that sport where nobody is allowed to have fun or get along...

golf or lawn bowls anyone?

I am not fast - up or down, but when I take my 3yr old laaitie along on a star seat on the top tube of my 26er, I'm even slower.

At the Sanlam Invitational little Patensie went along for the ride.  We hit the single track and a lady on a red (fastest colour) Spaz Epic (fastest bike) 29er (fastest wheel-size)  is riding SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWLY in front of us. My laaitie shouts at her: "Soppas tannie! Soppas," and "dankie tannie!" when she did "soppas". I should take him on all my rides, or maybe his little sister as she weighs less.

Ps. note comic sans
