Thank you everyone for all the valuable input and advice, I'm much more informed now.

This helped a lot. Looking forward to go bike shopping.

The principle of the balance bike for teaching kids and adults to ride is sound.

Whoever invented training wheels was propbably too lazy to run after his kid.

Kids bicycles like mayhem said are terrible, heavy with cheap components that detracts from the riding experience.

From balance bike get them onto a proper bmx, sized to their age and height. This could run you up to R5k and more.

However the weight will be appropriate, making it easy for the kid to focus on importnat skills rather than wrestling a big heavy bike that does not want to stop or go properly.

There is a decent second hand market for bikes like these.

Same principle applies to moving onto mtb...

both my boys Titans 16 inch was bought on Gumtree for R1k each, brand new they cost R2600. I also saw a 20inch Titan 8spd for R1k and bought that too, and keeping it till they grow into it. All 3 bikes in excellent working condition (yip scratches etc). So second hand market the way to go.

I am in a similar position as the OP except my son is 2. A balance bike definitely seems like the way to go but damn they are expensive. The Muna and Strider are both over a grand and the JD bug is a little under, if I am correct.

Has any one bought this from makro:

@R499 its seems much more reasonable considering the components that go into these bikes. I havent actually been into the store to look at it though so perhaps its really bad.

This morning I saw the exact same thing on the Makro website, also some 'Disney branded ones' for +-R100 more.

Surely there should be differences: most important I think is probably weight and quality.

Also what occurred to me now - what is the norm on the tires inflatable or solid?

Weight, solid tyres vs pneumatic and that stem height is FAR too high for a little one
