I think we can all safely assume you've never ridden the Epic...

Yes your assumption is quite correct. But I think all stage race courses are pretty boring.

I'd love to ride the Epic but not enough to remortgage my house to buy an entry...

Surely its not that expensive...

You think not?

How much do you think it will cost to do an Epic?

it's not just Entry fees. there is training expenses, bike services and maintenance (some peeps buy new bikes just for the Epic) traveling, etc etc.

Can turn out to be on the wrong side of 100K if you are not a sponsored rider.

Must say the coverage is pretty sh%tty. Looked in vain for a day one highlights last night - niks nie. Even small races get this right on a tight budget.

Today there is some 1m16 clip that tells me nothing. Horrible music, repeated scenes, wild animals,  just cr@p. Trying too hard to make a torturous slog on not very exciting trails look exciting. Blergh!

Okay I missed the 3mn 21 video highlights. But its still hype packed and that lion is still there. ..

highlights every night on super sport at 10.30pm, as far as I understand?

Unsurprising that the helicopter blew someone over, could see that happening from the prologue...

Watched the highlight package at 6 this morning, was lucky to see it.

Set my PVR to record last nights promised highlights, got up early to watch it and what do I see?  T20 CRICKET!!!  :cursing:

After a decent rant to myself, I flipped through the channels and saw the 6 o'clock transmission, so I at least got to see it before the next stage starts.

NOT GOOD DSTV!!!!!!!

Do not believe everything they promise you.....  :whistling:

So bad adelheid get blown off the bike by the helicopter @CapeEpic. But 2nd is a strong place for our women!! https://t.co/nUaNOURmCS

Jinne this race is hard enough. . And then they get blown over by the helicopter

That's stupidity on behalf of the pilot... if true

They (helicopter people) will have to be careful.... there are rules wrt how close you can fly to people...even if its a TV camera helicopter.

Wake up earlier in the morning and watch the live streaming :whistling:

I think you will struggle to find any mtb stage race with the footage I've seen so far...LIVE

My only complaint so far is that they show to much of the commentator talking instead of live shots...i can see he (Gerald de Kock) is watching live footage by following his eyes yet we have to watch him watch....

That is R35k for over a weeks worth of riding.... that is what you pay for a nice European tour based holiday without spending money or flights. You would be riding your bike in any event so you cant really include training costs etc etc etc unless you don't ride your bike and now suddenly want to ride Epic. And why buy a new bike? Surely you want to be on a bike that you know well.

Add flights and some accommodation on either side of the Epic and you will hit R65k (adding R30k because you want to recover down there and fly in a few days early as well so you want some spending money). You could probably do it for R80k if you add in the extras that you mention.

Is that a lot for a bucket list tick?

Depends how deep your bucket is...

Monark.

So you are doing thousands of kilometers in preparation for the Epic.

Is there no extra costs for servicing of bike/replacing worn out components. And you do not service your bike before the start of the Epic, fitting new components as much as you can, and take extras with for "in case"

And do you not use any supplements during your training?

This all ads up to costs you would not have incurred if you did not do the Epic.

I'm just training for the J2C, and I'm finding these "hidden costs" Quite sure they will be much more with the Epic.

Or maybe I'm just going about this the wrong way. :whistling:

what else can I say that if you dont do a recent ride report, I'll find someone who knows someone who will take me to your  door. Then I'll ask the other somebody who is bigger than me to have words with you :whistling:  - cause you might chase me away.
