New Zealand - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Is it true that a law was recently passed in NZ forbidding foreigners from buying houses?

Yes but not existing forriners

And once you have PR you can. Something like that, in order to prevent "holiday homes" being purchased by non residents who are apparently driving up property prices.

Yup, the law was passed but there are some exceptions.

  • Singaporean and Australian citizens can still buy property.
  • Other foreigners can buy property if it is to develop new housing (like apartment blocks). This helps alleviate the housing issue.
  • Residents (not just Permanent Residents) can buy property.

Maybe it will stop people like like Matt Lauer doing things like this

Cheeky questions Dave - where are the properties and what price range? Trying to gauge the market....

Benoni - R2.9m

Ramsgate - R1.9m

Both are houses on stands. Only thing moving at the moment are units in security complexes.

When I visited in Jan-March, I was told just this. The houses in my old neighbourhood (weltevreden park) are being marketed for roughly the same price (maybe +10-15%) as when I left 8 years ago...

I've been told that apart from the public having a reduced appetite for buying property at the moment, banks have a reduced appetite for writing bonds.

Dunno if that's true, but the source was somebody who should know.

Yep, even up north on the coast our property market is the same for the same reasons.

Banks want ridiculously large deposits and cash buyers are also having tough time with banks not eager for their business. Can you actually believe that?

It sounded unlikely when I first heard it, but seems that it is the case.

I think that when Uncle Pravin was in charge of SARS we could all kid ourselves that even if the fringes were fraying, that the core was solid.

Seems that wasn't the case, and the country is in a really bad state, more so than is readily apparent (and what is apparent is not that great in the first case.)

The missus is telling me she's been told we need to get the bikes steam cleaned.

I'm telling her we don't, they just need to be clean.

Can anyone provide some insight?

My bikes were just cleaned and boxed.  No steam cleaning.

I had my bikes washed and boxed at the LBS for Australia. My road bike was inspected by Customs and Quarantine. No problems.

I have brought 2 bikes over on 2 separate occasions. Both as checked in luggage while flying.

They asked what type of bike. As soon as I replied "mountain bike" they send me off for a bio-security inspection.

Basically they just look for mud anywhere on the bike. Like even in the seat-tube and the bottom opening of the steerer tube. But if you clean them well you'll be fine.

Heck! I was fine and those that know me will know how lazy I am when it comes to cleaning bikes

However, I'm not sure of the procedure if you're shipping them in a container. They might be more strict with that.
