I am a maargat,,around 65kgs and 50 y old I had the full test done and the bad cholestrl was around 5.

Doctor wanted me on pills but I said no.I then cut out some of the junk foods..loved my Simba chips and slap chips, the score dropped to 4.5 but I am still sort of worried.

I ride 4 to 5 times a week so fitness is no issue and I have been cycling for over 10 years.

Few things;

1. There is no such thing as 'bad' (or 'good') cholesterol. If your doctor is using these terms, be worried about his grasp of the topic.

2. High LDL-C is not necessarily an indicator of anything. You need to look at your total picture before you can decide if there is any concern.

3. Do NOT go onto statins unless you're 100% sure you've consulted with a knowledgeable specialist.

Can you post your full cholesterol results?

Very recently our 52 year old ,very fit and healthy ,friend got 2 stent,s after an angiogram revealed Coranary arterial disease .Only symptoms were occasional raised hearttempo while riding .Thre is a large proportion of these pasients 50% that only have a family history of CAD with no significant other abnormal health risks .So have yourself checked regardless of cholesterol ext

Red wine will improve HDL-C marginally (you want it higher than 1.7) but as the holy grail id TG/HDL, you should focus more on getting your Trigs as low as possible, aim fro under 1. And the answer here is to cut carbs, starting with the crap stuff and only end up with green, above ground veggies.

Cutting carbs does not work for everyone - there appears to be a population of people whose blood lipid profiles deteriorate significantly - for those people LCHO is not medically advisable - every GP I know is seeing these cases - the jury is still out on this subject but its clear to me its not for everyone.

While chatting to the quak last week...he was looking through my file and noticed that i hadnt requested new tablets for high cholesterol (HDL 8.2 and LDL 5.7) since 2013

I "HATE" taking medication...but he indicated that even if i change my lifestyle and get fit the LDL would not improve.

So here is my question...is there a way to reduce my LDL without taking a pill?

I am told that my high  LDL is a family issue passed on...and that the only way to reduce it is to take a pill...there must be a better way....even if it means i must eat cabbage or carrots.

This product is worth a try, most of my clients have used it with great results.

the other question is where can i have my LDL cholesterol tested without having to sell my bike to pay for the test?

I was specifically referring to Trigs.

Are you saying there are cases where cutting carbs INCREASE Trigs??

Great topic guys.

Been Banting for a year and lost loads of weight.

Not the most important issue though.

I was/supposed to be on 3 chronic tabs for high blood pressure, been using 2 for just on 15 years and another was added like 5 years ago. Blood pressure still remained around 140/90 consistently.

Started Banting and within a month noticed feeling dizzy after exercise, so cut out the tabs and have never used them since. At two MD appointments in the last year, my Dr reported my BP to be 120/85 and 130/80 respectively. I have never told him I stopped the meds and don't pick up the BP tabs from the chemist any more. My pharmacist was intrigued and asked me to bring him my cholesterol figures when I have it checked.

He was so impressed with what he saw, taking into account the fat I say I eat daily, that he made a copy of the stats.

I'm convinced in my case to never go back to carbs again.

I play a role in open heart surgery so deal with this every day.I don't want to get into the whole Tim Noakes or LCHF debate. All I can say is,ever since Banting came along,I have never ever been so busy at work.

If you don't want to get into that debate then maybe don't bring it up :)

A point I would like to add is what I said to my wife and some others. To my understanding or should I say logic, to go into the whole Banting thing half-hearted where you think you can have the best of both worlds is probably where I suspect many "sit die pot mis". If you want to consume high fat, then you have to remove the carbs. If you don't, like I suspect many end up, you just messing around in dangerous ground.

Like the guru said, the greater your activity level, the bigger your daily carb intake can be but there are limits. It must remain a LOW CARB regimen.

Actually, I'll take the bait and call BS on that statement.

Even if LCHF will kill you via some CVD event (it won't as many studies have proven), it would not do so within 36 months which is the longest most people have been "Banting'.

So our 'busy' friend is not that busy.

Unless his job is to collect unused cholesterol medicine from depots?

Docs, dietitians and medical profession just want your money.

Unfortunatly high cholesterol is in my genes. My father had tripple bypass surgery when he was 42 and passed away due to a heart attack not long after the surgery. I was in matric at that time. My elder brother passed away from a heart attack at 32 and my younger brother also had bypass surgery and subsequently passed away when he was 34.

I also tried to combat the cholesterol levels with correct eating and exercise, but when it continued to linger at >12 and my doctor put me on chronic cholesterol medication, I did not argue with him. I currently am on Aspavor 40mg, once a day. Even with such a relative high dosage my cholesterol levels lingers around 5, but fortunately does not go higher. I am almost 53 years old now, the oldest of the male members of our original Steyn family.
