Another timing chip company

Nope. The beauty of Racetecis that both contribute to your racetec seeding so you can compete in whatever you like and still have it count toward Argust

And that is the problem because you will get fast roadies entering a mtb event and they wont have the skill but because they have a good seeding on the road they will cause bottlenecks in technical sections. and you will get fast mtb riders in upper road bunches that don't have the skill and will be a danger to the riders around them.

That is why road and mtb seedings should be kept separate.

My big issue is keeping track of 4 different timing chips / Boards. Try as I like. I always end up scrambling the night before a race searching for the right timing chip / board.

I like things simple. Thats why I have spd's on all my bikes, I like my Garmin Fenix 3, as it works equally well as a running, cycling and general outdoors watch and I would have preferred a single timing chip for the odd run, road race / mtb race I do.

True, but in practice (once you get to the sharp end of the field) it is pretty hard to get a decent road seeding based on a mtb event, the gaps between the winners and the rest of the field are just that much bigger in mtb events compared to road events (and the winners are usually handy on the road anyway)

Roadies getting a good seeding on mtb events - ag most PPA mtb races are dirtroadie events anyway

In KZN most events are organised by ROAG. They liaise with whichever timing system the client prefers and then compile a seeding list from all their events irrespective of the timing company used. It works very well. ROAG has changed streamlined event organisation hugely in the province a.nd seeding is not a problem. Except for guys outside of the province who do not do a lot of ROAG organised racing

yip - and there is an agreement in place between the three main timing companies that they will all read each others chips and share results freely

I see the bulk of their results are MTB, so I'm assuming this agreement excludes the two bigger road timing companies?

But that is exactly my point (and many others on this thread). In order for me to get a good seeding at Racetec events I should have Racetec seeding. Which is dom.

Seeding shouldn't be kept by the timing chip company. Why is CSA there?

So far I have done many SASeeding races, and two Ractecs. Probably got seeded for 94.7 because of that Juma walk I did last year.  Avg speed was 8.8km/h. Made a lot of friends though, had a lot of time to chat at bottlenecks.

The race organizers of the big events use the chips as a safety measure.

If you can only get into the event with your chip, they then track all chips to make sure they all cross the matts at certain points, therefore can see if they are missing people etc and can open up roads.

Hi Guys,

Did I not hear on Super Cycling last night that all people that have a full racing licence will be issued with a timing chip and that there will be readers at all the races?

I might be wrong, but.....

RaceTec have by far the best website and in particular the viewability of its rider/race history.

I cant agree Racetec (green) vs Championchip, far more info on Championchip

Yes but if you want to compare more than one race, not just a whole bunch of random data which is not useful, may as well add in the temperature at the start, the gold price and the number of views Carly Rae Jepson has on her latest youtube video.

This is useful for comparing the results over time here:

I don't know the full ins and outs of how it works, but AFAIK:

Argus/Cape Town cycle tour - owned by Cape cycle tour trust

Pedal Power - beneficiary of Cape cycle tour trust

[ FYI - Rotary Claremont - also beneficiary of Cape cycle tour trust]

RaceTec(used to be winning time) - owned by Cape Cycle Tour trust.

So obviously they do all PPA races - but for me it is a bit murky where the profit incentive comes in.

Market fight for cycling timing with Championchip is also going to happen, and in theory it's a good thing to keep prices down. I've heard it's even worse in road running where it's mainly Championchip vs the old school timing company who still do everything by hand(i kid you not - some tannie writes your race number down as you cross the line, and then they tear a tag off it for later). Other players coming into the market is good - keeps the dinosaurs on their toes.

As a direct comparison, I'd agree that Racetec displays a bit better, but Championchip also show previous race history is summary form:

And then you can drill deeper from there
