Saw this on Twitter, looks like the DC not a 70,3. Should have made everyone do 50 push ups to seed the bunch ;)

urgh that is just nasty. Surely they could have just put in a 5k run in place of the swim?

Would have done the job of breaking up the bunch.

Firstly,I am from an open water swimming background and am a strong swimmer..was disappointed they canned the swim at the time but in hindsight it was definitely the right call. Of the field more than 50 percent were first timers and 65% were from Gauteng where the nearest sea in Boksburg is gentle so it would of resulted in mayhem. Sometimes we must just accept it. While some people would of been ok the vast majority would not be. Where the organizers can perhaps take some flack is in e fact they organised an event on full moon which influences the tide but that's it and possibly they don't have to much choice.

Secondly, I started on the bike around 8:40 and there was little drafting in the earlier leavers. Of course there was but not a lot. The picture above is no worse than last year even with the swim. Too many people in too little space really.

That little kickback loop is damn dangerous with thousands of bikes, motorbikes etc etc. they really should consider taking the cycle out 10 kays more.

Lastly, the run for me was hell yesterday, no rhythm and damn hot and really battled. My slowest ever 21 Kay run. Still sore today.

Gonna go swim now ;) then back home.

Tweet from Lucie Zelenkova, I think she was the first woman out of the water yesterday:

"There is a swim and then there is a "swim". More then right call it was cancelled for age group. I'm very grateful I'm still alive"

Eish...see Stuart Marais got DQ'd.

Thanks for all the support out there today - life & death situation in the final 150m of swim got me DQ'ed! The rest of the race was great!

Wow that must be tough to swallow after coming 2nd. Any idea what he did to earn that?

They should probably think hard about it considering the circumstances, although I doubt they would have taken a decision like that lightly.

Agreed, they should have made it a duathlon spread the field a bit.

Heard that he held onto one of the rescue craft.

Cannot agree more with ICM, that kickback loop got me undone when on the way back on the second time it got congested and I got switched, all I remember was a guy next to squeezing in and then I was down. Broken Collarbone and concussion. But it happens and after avoiding the reaper for years I guess it was my turn.

Wow that sucks, sorry to hear about that. Nice excuse to take a break for a bit!!

Take it easy and heal up.

As mentioned the swim cancellation was a good decision and I'm not a person who is scared of water. I was already a bit unsure during the Saturday swim as I went in after the training session was cancelled and found the rip and cross currents hard work.

The ride was awesome. Used HR and power and found the ride awesome.

The run though was CRAP! I see a lot of people mentioning 8km, but my hassles started at 12km and then it was "wielietjies af". Finished though and, in hind sight, happy with my first one.

Sorry to hear that man. I had a couple of hairy moments there too. Just too many people. downright dangerous.

Heal up quick
