Cool race to do I'm sure but why advertise it as a seeding event for CTCT. For 2017. What's the point to that, by then the result is over a year old and picked up a pile of penalty points.

This will be my 6th time, very nice ride. Just wish they would take it through that patch of dirt on Contermanskloof again - that was an excellent ride.

Where is the "Dislike This" button

Too date my only puncture in a road race was on that gravel section - must be purely a coincidence... Only good thing is that puncture saved me from a nasty group crash.

The scenes straight out of "Saving Private Ryan" with broken bikes lying around in the brown dust clouds & bleeding cyclists screaming in pain have stuck in my memory...

Will skip this race if they ever include that section again

(The guy complaining on thehub about the scratches on his expensive carbon bike was funny though  )

I loved that bit, and the fact that the distance was 99km on the dot - hence the name 99er.

As for the people that went off there, it just shows some people need to brush up on their skills. Anyone can ride a bike on tarmac, however what about snow, ice, gravel... now that is where it gets interesting.

I despise the bit on the N7 and that poor excuse of a road leading too it.

What about the guy that was riding along at 55km/h and the knob next to him locks up his front brake and takes both of them down?

Last year the poor Marshal got KO while standing in the middle of the road in front of the first bunch.

Yep - I recall a lot of wonderful advice on thehub on how roadies should HTFU, brush up on their bike handling skills and stop complaining about a bit of gravel.

As Savage explained, if the guy ahead of you or next to you in a big group come a cropper no silky mtb skills or quick reactions will save you from a nasty crash. That section is unsafe given the size & speed of the groups going through there.

Brilliant Saving Private Ryan metaphor

Yes, it was carnage in the top seeded bunches hey

Hehehe

I think it was a guy with a Cervelo that moaned about his fiets

I think the chance of winning a Giant Propel is worth possibly having a scratch of two (never mind the fact that my entire bike costs less than the rims on that thing!)

I punctured missing a horrific pile up on the R44 so started the gravel section in J group. There were people lying everywhere on the banks on the side. Saving Ryan's Privates may very well have happened, but I was too busy skidding into a ditch to notice. Never again.

Not really a problem if you drop out of a group and just enjoy a solo fun ride. Which is what I did that day and loved the dirt.

They really should tar that section, even if it is just a quick chip and spray job.
