Holy moly. They must have just injected him without knowing and nothing was done about it. Sounds like codds wallop to me. Anyone on here been able to find anymore info on this bloke. I'd love to know if he still rides competitions.

I see that was almost 10 years ago - we probably would have recognised his name if he made it...

I would like to imagine excuses like "The doctor must have accidently injected me with it" would not fly nowadays like it did then, but see how eager CSA was to lap up Rourke's needle stories

I see he has a website named after himself.

Just be careful what you say, he seems to be a fancy pants lawyer now.

I know him personally, very very good friend of mine. He was heavily into his cycling as a lightie, and was pushed pretty (very) hard back then. Didn't know him when he was 16 (only met him when he was out of school) but I can imagine that he was given something to boost his performance, without his knowledge, based on the stories and how he (and other team mates of his, who I also know) saying that they were just "given things to take" - protein powders, supplements etc.

He hasn't ridden professionally, semi pro or otherwise for approximately 6 years. Had all sorts of things promised to him, but then had a bad bout of Epstein Barr (yuppie flu) around 5 or 6 years ago and then started studying Law and didn't pick up his bike anymore. Doesn't even have a bike anymore. Just runs.

I wouldn't have any reason whatsoever to doubt that testimony. None at all.

In fact, up until today I didn't even know that he had had that hearing. Something I would have wanted to forget, very quickly.

Shame what a shiiity ending to a seemingly great young potential star.

strange how as a community we quickly paint people we don't know with tar and feathers but when we do know them we tend to believe and give benefit of the doubt. strange thing this human nature

As some might know, I have myself a 15 and a 16 year old at the moment and both cycle, but not competitively beyond riding the Argus and having fun in between.

If ever, anyone, teacher, coach, godfather, I don't care who, give them EPO, all the wrath of hell will descend on them.....I don't quite promise murder on an open forum, but it might come close! And that will be a Sunday school picnic compared to what Mrs D will do to the peddler.

I think anyone even just encouraging youngsters to use things like EPO or steroids, should be exposed for the evil ******* they are! As for supplying them with banned and dangerous drugs and even administering it, with or without their knowledge, should earn them physical harm! Ok, I'll dial back the call for violence, but a life ban from even looking at a bicycle sounds good, that's after the jail sentence has run its course!

(I'm in a foul mood because red tape ate up my afternoon ride.) :cursing:

Agreed.

Having said that, your little pocket-rocket of a wife would be enough to give me 2nd thoughts! Can just imagine her going on the rampage...

Red tape - for a dentist? Must have been med aid related...

Why didn't he tell you about the hearing?

Here it is, in all it's Shakespearean glory:

I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth

and indeed, it goes so heavily with my disposition;

that this goodly frame the Earth, seems to me a sterile promontory; this most excellent canopy the air, look you, this brave o'er-hanging firmament,

this majestical roof, fretted with golden fire: why, it appears no other thing

to me, then a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.

What a piece of work is a man, how noble in Reason, how infinite in faculties,

how like an angel in apprehension, how like a God!

The beauty of the world, the paragon of animals. and yet to me, what is this quintessence of dust?

Man delights not me; no, nor woman neither.

Best delivery ever: Withnail and I

Yup, it is strange. I remember on the Brandon Stewart thread - I suffer personally from the exact condition that he is 'supposed to be' and for which I know has extremely annoying symptoms. I have been told about the treatment and the possible side effects and chose not to go ahead and live with it. I am sure my performance would have benefitted hugely - of I was a Pro racer and not a hundred and tweleventy years old. So I sympathised with him a lot, while also wondering if he was pulling a fast one.

On the youngster here that Myles knows - the first thing I thought was

1) how sad

2) then someone said they coach and dad took a lie detector, and I thought 'why not the kid'?

3) having interacted with Myles for a good number of years, I suspect he probably asked all the questions I did when he saw it. (Not putting words in your mouth, squire! :)) but I suspect human nature would prevent his bud saying anything, especially if he wasn't 'guilty' And at age 16, I would probably give him the benefit too. It's just fricken sad, either way. And although I have no clue about DJR's pocket rocket, I wish a few more of them would wonder into our gyms and look at their 'little boys' with a bit less love and a bit more of a critical eye.

Unfortunately up until yesterday, I had no clue. This happened when he was 16, I met him when he was 18 or 19 or so. I can imagine he was heavily embarrassed by it, so I can understand the reluctance to talk about it.

But ja - I wouldn't want to be the guy on the receiving end of DJR's other half's ire.

Weird, also thought about the guy yesterday... Personally I gave him the benefit of the doubt although I know that sentiment is not widely shared here on hubland

Interesting hearing the other side of Michael's story from Myles. Given that the outjie was only 16 at the time he might very well have been misled...

The sad fallout from the high prevalence of cheaters/druggies in our sport is that us the cycling community never give the benefit of the doubt to the few okes who tests positive by accident or made an "innocent" mistake (for lack of better term)

At 16 how level headed are we really.....how hectic is peer pressure at that age.....live and let live.....as long as he is healthy today and successful at what he does then kudos to him......
