Best bike rack for sedan with no towbar?

Hopefully the subject line spells it out, but I'm looking for a very good bike rack for a sedan without a towbar

The Thule Raceway looks great, but is exceptionally expensive - so looking for alternatives to that which hopefully won't damage the car or bike

The Saris Bones also looks good. Also expensive, though.

They look good, but I wonder if they're actually any better than the cheaper Thule options - I've never used one so have no idea.

What type and number of bikes do you intend carrying?

For the gold budget solution, Id easily recommend fitting a towbar so that you can use a platform that supports the bikes wheels type rack.

If you only transport one bike at a time, i wouldnt buy a rack at all, and transport it on my back seat/seats folded down and wheels taken off as a permanent solution.

If you are convinced you need a boot mount solution, i dont believe you will get away from scratches, small dents etc.

The Thule ClipOn 9103 works well. Use it for both Audi A3 and VW Polo and even though angles are different at the back the rack can adjust accordingly to fit both.

Bought it second hand here for R500, best purchase yet!

It's not for me - I 100% agree and have always used platform racks myself (until I got a bakkie). I think he needs the space in the car for the family so the bike must be outside. Just looking for the best option at this stage - not going to find the perfect one!

I would suggest roof racks to him, but I've managed to write off 2 bikes in separate incidents when I forgot they were there and drove into a garage so I can't recommend that to anyone!

Do they work on sedans as well? Thule seem to only recommend them for hatch and station wagons.

If that one doesn't work then the Thule ClipOn High 9105 will work. The only thing I did extra to it was glue on additional rubber lining where I thought it could scratch paint. Literally takes less than a minute to fit on and take off.

Bingo.

There is no such thing as a good non-towbar bike rack. It's like asking for a DH bike which can be used to ride Sani2C comfortably.

I have a 3 bike Raceway that I use on my 3 series. One of my best cycling purchases to date.

Extremely easy to install/remove, Bikes are so easy to mount and no noticeable damage to the car at all.

I mount it so that the "bottom" rests in the numberplate "groove". this allows me to open the boot with 2 bikes on if necessary. The Saris looked like it only fastened down to the bumper which I didn't like.

Unfortunately can't send a pic as I am nowhere near my car for the next few weeks.
