What becomes of stolen bikes (Cheap Groupsets)

Agreed

Had to wade through the waffel and not any the wiser.Dont know why it was not reported as well

I'm terribly sorry that my effort to bring this to your attention wasn't exactly as you might have liked it to be presented, but the reality of it is that I am 12000km away in a very different time zone. After figuring out what was up, I got up early in the morning, rushed to my computer and quickly typed out that 'waffel' before going in to work and then away for the weekend.

As for getting the SAPS involved, or even the bike shops with missing bikes, there is no way they can prove ownership of groupsets. See the problem, clever dicks? My brother tried all of that, at his own time and expense, and there was little he could do beyond keeping my money out of the hands of a dodgy dealer. I'd like to think every other hubber will have the same level of consideration for their fellow cyclists. Well, I'd like to. But the market for hot goods is clearly booming, which some poor sod will learn to his detriment today or tomorrow or later in the week.

There's some more 'waffel' for you to chew on, cuzzin.

It really really gets to me why, in almost all instances, a whistleblower's motive is put into question.

Good on you Intern.

Well done D...

I have been saying this since the bike jackings started about 10 years ago already...sell the parts asap and sit on the frames till the heat is off...also it is easy enough to build a bike, go and ride it at least once, drop it a couple of times and scratch it to make it look second hand so that when it is moved on no one asks questions as to its original origins.

But how's this theory as well - a shop gets broken into, bikes removed. parts stripped and sold locally, frame transported to Cape Town lets say, and advertised as a CT seller, the buyers may or may not join the dots that this bike is hot and stolen in Jozi cuz its from CT...???

I have sold a frame (obtained correctly) and sold it on without the buyer even batting an eyelid when I told him that I am upgrading my wife's bike (all truth of course). What I am pointing out is that someone may not even care that I ride a 56cm frame but I am selling a 50cm frame "because my wife rides that size".

Anyway enough "waffling" - perhaps people need to start paying a premium and KNOWING where the parts are coming from and you might find that the market for stolen goods drops off...

Its amazing that we live in a society where we now need to question things in such detail?
I long for the days gone by where this type of senario rightly or wrongly was never even considered... now days it seems like a daily occurance and makes bicycle trading/upgrading damn difficult  (new seems to be the only way to go... even at this ZAR level)

Have you reported the seller to admin now

Buddy, since you haven't gathered this yet, the Bike Man's Bike Hub identity is far less important than his MO is.

But let me spell it out for you, just in case: Today Bike Man, tomorrow Super Man, next day Spider Man.

You will spot these skelms not by their hub names, but by the way in which they are selling these goods.

Maybe that will also help explain the 'waffel' shop I've taken my time to provide.

I hope you reported this to the shop they may have been stolen from so that they can follow up with a possible police case?

My brother checked with the shops to establish the spec. I kept quiet while he was doing this (and stringing Bike Man along) in the hope that some sort of sting could be set up. That was not possible, so I moved on to writing a 'waffel'.

Have passed details to Matt/Nick so they can do whatever they can do.

You will have for forgive me for having zero confidence in the SAPS. They couldn't understand how someone could use a phone in Joburg to report a break in in progress in Cape Town when I needed their help that time.

Can you imagine starting a conversation with 'well, I am in New Zealand and there is someone selling a new XT groupset that most likely was stolen from a shop in Lynnwood'.

As they say here, 'yeah, nah'.

Not to get between the 'handbags' that are developing here - but I have to disagree a little. The note re such and similar MOs is important and I think many are aware and in tune to this. But why not take it a step further with regards to this specific incident and just report the user - Admin will get involved and make it harder for the user to sell his goods. They even have means to pick a re-visit under an alternative handle. So although seemingly a small jesture it could make a difference in preventing the recurrence of at least Bike Mans MO...

Edit: I see you have, having read the above post.

My handbag is bigger than yours  :w00t: . It has been with admin for some time already. TBH in the hurry of rushing downstairs to share my experience and then bolt off on a Friday, it didn't immediately occur to me to alert Admin; instead, I wanted to make sure others knew what was going on so they would not be tempted into buying a ridiculously cheap groupset using the happy excuse of 'I diddun know'.

I see he is still an active member. In fact he has a positive rating going back to April 2014.

He is probably the sole member following this thread.

Jeepers you can go on...

I disagree with you.His identity is important and the bike shop should be directed to him and let them and the cops deal with it.Unlike you i do have faith in our police.

Keyboard vigilantes and sleuths dont inspire much confidence..
