GeoffChisnall Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Hi Been on the hunt for a MTB since December and I still have no luck.I have been wanting to get into MTB and been looking at budget around 8k-9k. Now that it is 2016, that budget has gone to to shreds because of the exchange rate and the prices of bikes has shot through the roof! I had a Merida Big Nine 40D in my grasp until there was a big ballsup and it got sold when I had first choice. I am now considering a Titan just because it is the most affordable for me at this stage. I have been looking on the Hub and Gumtree but most of the bikes I have seen only are XL or Medium. Should I wait until something pops up on the classifieds or do I just go with a Titan? At this stage I am very frustrated, any advice would be appreciated regardsGeoffrey
AlanD Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Maybe put out a wanted add in the classifieds also if you cant find what you want. I wouldn't buy just for the sake of buying but i can understand your frustration. There are places that rent bikes for you to ride for the day that is an option until you find what you looking for. I would think bike shops are willing to give some bargains this time of the year so that may be another option for you.
KingTJ Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Be patient, the right bike will come, buying the wrong bike will just frustrate you...you will know when it is the right bike for you.
GeoffChisnall Posted January 16, 2016 Author Posted January 16, 2016 Thanks guys. Always good to hear it from someone else!
J∆kk∆ls Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Wait for the right bike. 26" is great fun and fast down hill. Go 1x10 or 1x9 from the start. It's all you need.
The expat cyclist Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I am not sure how often it happens that the first bike you buy ends up being the last bike you buy unless you never ride it after you bought it of course. And it is like it was said above: buying the wrong bike can be a deal breaker for you. My advice: don't try and get the perfect bike on first buy. Just get the right bike. Right size and within your budget. Shop around a lot. Read about bikes a lot. Ask opinions of people you can trust.
Thor Buttox Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 There are some shops around where you can get good prices on old stock. Some of them have better components than newer bikes. This may also help even if it's just to have a look:Www.obike.co.za
kOOsi3 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I bought my 1st MTB (silverback saturn) ever last year december and had a lot of fun riding the harkerville trails in plett. I was hooked and only want to ride now. Got back home and have been looking around for something better. Sold the bike in the meanwhile and have nothing to ride currently, but I'm patiently waiting for the right bike. Good luck with your search. There's a lot of nice bikes available on the hub, just keep looking.
porqui Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Patience! pays off in the end. Any size bike will do 1st time round. Do not get 1x10 or 1x9 as a first ride. You want to enjoy your riding.

You want to enjoy your riding. Not sure why you say not to go for 1x10 or 1x9? Assume you saying get a 1x8 to get used to the gearing? Most people I have spoken to says to get a 1x10 or 1x9.
porqui Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 If you are a seasoned rider I would go 1x whatever but if starting out I would stick to 2x whatever. It just makes for smoother and easier riding (on the body). The purists would say 1x1. I've had a 1x1 on my tail on a very techy single track and felt bad about holding him up.
GeoffChisnall Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 Does anyone know if there is a difference between the Merida Big Nine 20D and Merida Big Nine 40D frame? I am just getting that they both use the Big 9 Speed frame. One site says the 40D uses the OV version and the 20D uses the CV version. This is greek to me. Does it even matter? Reason I am asking is, shop I wanted to buy the Merida from has come back to me saying they can swop the frames and put the 40D components onto the 20D frame. Next question of course is, is this a good thing? Re-selling wise?
JXV Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Not sure why you say not to go for 1x10 or 1x9? Assume you saying get a 1x8 to get used to the gearing? Most people I have spoken to says to get a 1x10 or 1x9.He is saying - do not go for a 1x system as a novice rider. 1x systems have a reduced range of gear ratios that may not suit you until your legs strengthen up a bit. Stick with a 2x or 3x system and convert later.
