Kudo's to all the helpful MTB'ers out on the trail today. You guys saved my ride. After a badly cut sidewalk which ate 2 plugs, 4 bombs and 2 tubes of my own I had 3 people stop and help over the next 10km with spare tubes, duct-tape and bombs. What a great community, amazing how a ride that was going so wrong had some sweet moments. I've helped others before but never needed help myself until today, boy is it priceless!!

definitely the race of the year ..... what an event, great riding, great people, great atmosphere... no wonder i keep going back.... the trails keep improving, we had extreme wind and heat and it was just to damn awesome ...the chillzone on the river was the bomb.

Him and his partner (my sub) are both on singlespeeds, but his partner is on a fat bike..it's pink, you can't miss it.

I saw them, serious respect to team 3113! I don't know which would have been worse, the singlespeed on those climbs, or the rigid forks on the downhills...

I was on a hardtail - you just need to stand a little more.

Yeah, wish I could enter right now to ensure I get a place again for next year :)

Lol

I can tell you he is broken today. Back, arms are so sore he he.. he said at a stage he was aiming for thorns in the hope he would get a puncture or side wall cut so he could just stop riding ha ha ha..

He had a really tough time on the bike yesterday, eventually told his brother in law to go ahead without him.. so you can guess they received a huge time penalty because they didn't finish together.[emoji12]

Who knows a nice rigid singlespeed may pop up in the classified section soon[emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

Did anybody do the SELF-camping thing in a caravan / camper on any of the 3-day events?

Would like to get an idea of costs involved please if somebody might know?

- does it work out per person, or per site / per day?

- can you buy any arm-bands for extra people for food, or would it be self-catering for the non-rider?

Would like to get some idea, thanx...I would ask the race office, but I think they are taking a well deserved break for a few weeks / months

NO WORRIES...got my answer from the race desk by mail...now to wait for 2017 race entries  :w00t:

Was a great race and very well organised.

Pro's:

* Chillzone - FREE BEER & awesome laid back setting along the Tugela River.

* Route - First time I have ridden berg & bush and the trails are sublime. Better than Sani2c in my humble opinion.

* Food - Really enjoyed the food and thought that there was a nice variety each day. This included the excellent water points.

* Spionkop - Thoroughly enjoyed the Spionkop history lesson, was very interesting & informative.

Cons:

* Ablutions - The ablutions were not up to scratch at our tented area (Furthest tents away from chillzone). I don't think 5 x showers/1 x basin was adequate for the amount of people. Think a bit of more effort could be put into this for years to come.

* Medal - I personally would of preferred a medal instead on the stem cap. Holds more value to me and can frame it with the other stage races that I have completed. Not a major gripe though.

Jetline has lost the plot.

R529 for digital download?

Got my Mankele images from showme in high res FOR FREE.

There are some real nice images this time, but I'll be damned before I pay half a gorilla for a digital download package.

Sorry, I know it's been posted and discussed ad nausea on this forum.

Completely agree, that pricing is nuts! May be cheaper to hire a graphic design student for half an hour to remove their watermarks...

The Missus rode as well, so make that R1060 for the two of us.*

Insanity.

* I never budgeted to do this race, but received a last minute emergency partner invite, thus my ticket was paid for. ( in case I get a comment of "if you can pay for the race, surely you can pay for photos")

Was there for all three events (lucky me) Rode the Descent and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great camaraderie amongst the riders on all 3 events. Trails are just perfect, technical bits interspersed with some recovery roads and a few gnarly climbs to sort out the pink skirts. Watched the Great Trek from the sidelines and saw a lot of underfit and under trained riders blow out in the heat. Surprise - you need to train for this kind of event!! Skills training also helps if you want to show off - yup, picked up a few that tried tricks and failed. Wish I had footage of some of them - could make a fortune with blackmail. Two day was a wild one - rode the first day and realised that the skill level is non existent for a good deal of the field. Was busy picking up over extended riders on day 2 that again thought this was a fun ride. Really, if you going to spend this kind of money - do a bit of training so you can actually enjoy the route without puking your lungs out, nearly all over me on a few occasions! Trails are awesome and Gary and his team put on an event second to none. Chill zone top class and catering is great.

A few things that seem to be forgotten - sunblock, hydration and enough spares.

And for the guy who came past me and asked if I had a spare saddle - to which I answered yes and he just carried on riding - I actually had one in the back of my vehicle. Sometimes people amuse and amaze me.
