TUBBIES vs CLINCHER - How sensible on our roads?

Cheers folks.

We are straying into performance territory which is a whole new can of worms beacuse the lines are definitely becoming a little blurred (Thank you ZIPP).

Let me be a little clearer.

Does anyone regularly ride tubbies on training rides? Are there regular issues with puncturing on our roads? Is the benefit worth the aggrevation (If any)?

Thanks again

In December I only had my tubbies with me on holiday in Durban. Punctured 4 times, two were nice cuts and unrepariable, and one tubie only had 70kms on it.

Since I have been back from holiday, clinchers all the way. Still undecided if I will use tubbies in races as I would end up carrying a spare tubbie.

Now we are cooking on gas. Good info and sorry for your bad experience.

I race tubs

Train clincher

Both carbon

For several seasons now

The best scenario is a set of solid carbon clinchers, good quality, for all-round usage.

Simple yet effective for the amateur

Thanks 'Dale

Good advice and I am leaning that way

i have owned cheap carbon clinchers in the past. they flex, they go out of true. and in the end they drove me nuts.

i'm 70kg and not massively strong.

do yourself a favour and buy decent ones, even if they are heavier than the cheap ones, it will save you a massive headache.

now i'm riding Roval Carbon CLX 60's clinchers. got them used off the hub. they are unreal!!

nb the golden rule:

CHEAP, LIGHT, ROBUST: pick any 2... you can't have all 3

I am 1.93m and and am not built like Johan Vansummeren.

ZIPP 404's look good with a 120kg rider limit.

I am no Strava monkey looking for KOM's. Just a good solid set of wheels.

I will keep my eyes peeled.

I wouldn't bother with tubbies - even in light of the above test.  If you get a wide rim - I 23mm or so, your tire will behave like a tubbie anyway.  Fitting a 25mm tire (if your frame will handle it) reduces the rolling resistance even more.  Big guys need lots of spokes so if you go for the lighter rims make sure you order with enough holes and that you can get hubs to match.  Check out http://www.light-bicycle.com/.  I have built a number of sets from them - including DH wheels and their quality/price is excellent.  They will even supply tubbies if you want to torture yourself!

Train with clinchers , race and sometimes train with tubbies , I got some flats with Vittoria Tubulars , Since I changed to Conti Gator skins very lucky with no flats , On My second set already ,found that they wear quit fast , Replaced the first set because the canvas were starting to show , I just love riding My bike with tubbies .

If your wife is happy to drive and come and fetch you when you have a flat during training at 5:30 and the kids are  waking up with no babysitter... - then ride tubbies - otherwise - stick with clinchers.

Hehehe

Indeed

When I use those tubs, I declare to my partner that she must please be on standby ????

I have mixed feelings towards tubbies, don't train on them! I carry a spare tubby AND one of those repair canisters when I 'race'. I have used the spare tubby once ....

It may be a 'placebo' effect I don't know but my bike does feel different when I ride them though

My wife has one answer - "Walk..... and don't be LATE for.....(insert appropriate event here - like kids school run...)"

Mine answers with a dull and rather uninterested

"sure, babes..."

And then rolls her eye-balls

(Pretending not to care ????)

My wife said : wat? Ag nee man! Waar is jy?

Have 1 bike on gatorskin foldable clinchers and second bike on gatorskin tubbies. Tubbies ride better, especially in corners. I cannot say which puncture more as I hardly ever puncture. Carry a pressurised sealant cannister for back up with tubbies but never had to use it. You better hope writing this doesn't jinx me or I'll put a saddle sore spell on you! ;-)
