jcza Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 And spin out at 35km/h unless you have a Sram cassette with a 10 - 42 With a 32T ring and 11-40 cassette I spin out around 42km/h. Not great but my frame is 1 x specific so I don't have a choice.
Gnarly Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 And spin out at 35km/h unless you have a Sram cassette with a 10 - 42 If you going over 35km/h at Epic, chances are you going down hill. So just freewheel at the back of the bunch and get sucked along.
Baracuda Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 The topic was discussed last year as well; https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/147758-cape-epic-2015-1x11-chainring-advice/

Mada3400 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Its bassically what im running.32 Oval is like 30 on climbing, 34 on flats/downhills Wow that's amazing! getting 2 different circumferences from a single ring with... 1... circumference... Since you've already broken science and logic this morning why not go the full monty and stretch the oval to being 26t for the hills and 38t for the flats and descents! I also just got an oval chainring, but unfortunately for me Olympic didn't have the absolute 'black magic' oval chainrings in my BCD.

Does not mean it is true, but it is what is being used to sell the product.Consumers ignorance is being exploited.
varkie2 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Im running 2 x 10, 11-36 back and 26/39 front.

raptor-22 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Im running 2 x 10, 11-36 back and 26/39 front. How does that make you feel?

After scowering the Absolute Black website I'm going to have to ask for the link, because while it says a lot of things there, they never once say that it acts like a 32t uphill and a 36t downhill.
waveduke Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I did the Tankwa Trek last week on a borrowed bike with 32 x 11-40.This 1x10 setup is just not my thing - you get tired too quickly. I wouldn't do the Epic (especially this Epic) with the said setup. At least have a 42 ring at the back... I'll tackle the Epic on 2 x 10 with 38/24 and 11-36. We are aiming Top 100.I really don't understand why people would ride a single front ring on a marathon stage race?!
Jakkals. Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 And spin out at 35km/h unless you have a Sram cassette with a 10 - 42 I can easily ride 44km/h with a 32-11. just need to work on the cadence and lungs!

Godzilla Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Howdy Hubbers, I need to find out a bit regarding the Absa Cape Epic.I'm doing my first Absa Cape epic but wondering if my Bike ratios will be ok. I'm riding a 1 x 10, with a 32 Oval in Front and 11-40 at back? I've done the Transcape with it, with no issues,Did the 1 x 10, 11-36 last year on the did Pioneer and J2C Will it be ok?I did Epic with 2 x 10 lasy year and was happy i did. We finished in the top 40%.I did Tankwa this year with 1 x 11.....32 x 11/42 and it was barely manageable on day 2 which had 2000m of climbing in 90km's.I would say 1 x 10 with only a 40 on the back will be very hard going on some of the uphill ST bits by the 2nd half of the week.I would seriously consider 30 upfront and get a 42 on the back for Epic.....or go 2 x 10.
Bosveldklong Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Just go XT 3x11. With the 40/11 to 22/40 you'll have "hakuna matata" about anything at the Epic. That is till you drop a chain climbing......
