Also love my Zipps 303. Even love them more after replacing the standard steel bearings with ceramic bearings.

Haven't ever had the opportunity to try a highend set of wheels like the 303s. Do the ceramic bearings really make that big a difference?

They roll better than your normal steel bearings. It cost a pretty penny. Thinking of doing my TT bikes beraings as well. Think my 303 our performs my tt deep sections any time.

We're only listing brand names at the moment, which for me is almost a pointless exercise. More about emotional connections & limited personal experience, and less about scientific fact.

How about we do something different. We start with identifying the best characteristics of what an ideal road wheelset should be, based on latest scientific research.

Then we match the brands that most closely match these best characteristics.

Suggested criteria:

  • Wheelset rotational weight
  • Material lay-up (e.g. ali vs carbon) and how it relates to lateral stiffness, etc.
  • Tyre width (23mm vs 25mm)
  • Rim width (e.g. from a 15mm to 17/18mm inner width)
  • Rim depth (e.g. 38mm vs 50mm)
  • Rim shape & aerodynamics (and how the new rounded designs affect yaw angle and stability in cross winds, etc).
  • Braking surface (and how different surface types are affected by wet weather, etc)
  • (What have I left out?)

For example, current research is much more about wider rim / tyre widths and rounder rim shapes at the moment.

Bora One

I'm half in the market for new hoops myself and this was one of the ones I was considering...

Here's a question though, is there really that bigger difference between the Bora One's with ceramic bearings / Carbon hubs and the standard ones? Apart from the price that is...

I don't know, for that price you'd find a lot of different options in the carbon clinchers market and a lot more innovation in terms of widths, profiles and more. Look, I don't think there is anything wrong with them but for me AMC make some of the best Alu hoops going and that is where their skills are.

If I'm going to look to carbon then the new mavic range is worth a look as is those Fulcrum carbons from above. Not sure what they go for though.
