Is Specialized a bike shop or a boutique?

Morning guys,

When I bought my latest Cannondale the suppliers changed the stem, h/bar and crank for me. Which is pretty good.

It's another story to get a replacement frame from them. Mine cracked!

I have never bought a bike from them before,but I have to say Complete cyclist Bedfordview is definitely not like this,very willing to help and assist where they can,unlike a nearby Concept store...

Wow - that's a new one, never heard that before - you need to join Trevor Noah :)

 

I can see two Cannondale teams in the mens top ten final results of the Epic, but am I reading it right - no Specialized !!

I can second that.  Guys at Complete Bedfordview have helped me out lots, even though my bike was purchased elsewhere.

So you come on to the hub to complain about a boutique bike shop?

 

bit of a stretch calling it a boutique bike shop, the big S is hardly boutique...

When wanting to buy a new bike from probably one of the biggest "real local" bike shops in SA I asked about upgrading the existing components etc and was told no problem, we will sell you the new parts and fit them, you just need to sell the existing parts on the Hub...

 

Edit: So I don't think this is a Specialized specific approach.

Its not a Specialized specific policy, I have worked in numerous stores where this was common practice- to not "take back" parts off a bike...

 

Think about the book keeping, the shop takes back a part, there is no invoice for said part from any supplier but when the taxman asks then there is some explaining to do as to where the part came from and why it was sold under a miscellaneous part code in the accounting system - to any auditor worth his chips it looks like a money laundering scheme. Businesses can and do get into trouble for this behavior.

 

Also the part that is "taken back" has no "value" in terms of paper work, so yes the shop in theory doesn't lose money but on paper they do - your stem was not paid for but they are "selling" a replacement part of your choice at no cost...also the part codes need to be created for your part so they can be re-sold which is a whole lot of admin for someone- which costs the shop for their time...

 

So next time you throw your toys about not getting your way, think about the implications of your requests...

What I don't understand is why the OP wants to swap the wheels and group set in the first place. We all know Spez makes the best bikes. You don't swap nottin on them bikes.

 

It will go a long way if the OP can perhaps state what he wanted swapped i.e. Roval for AC, SRAM x7 for x9 and if his expectation was to only pay the difference between the components or buy the new components on then ask the (L)BS to replace it.

Looks like I need to get into the bike game....

 

I would think that the accounting bit would be the easiest part...

 

Problem with bike shops in the main, is that they operate a simple point of sale system, ie: they don't gather client info, & in the process invoice all purchases through each clients account. (Sometimes I have to wonder why...) They also fail to get a database at the point of sale, so great opportunity lost for return business.

 

I would open a client account for Skinnyone, with cell & email. Done.

 

I would then credit Skinnyone's account with 1 x Spez 100mm stem ( slightly below my standard cost as I now am carrying unintended stock), and then Invoice Skinny for the full value of bike + ritchey 80mm stem (that cost me 1 phone call @ R1.25 to generate R1000.00 turnover in an up sale) & please a customer. The package works out the balance. Sounds too easy to me.

 

I sometimes read articles about brick & mortar bike shops bitchin about the online guys, but here someone has opened the barn door real wide, and it gets kicked shut... Wow!

 

Me thinks the days of making easy money are long behind us. Either differentiate or someone will.

My recent experience is that Specialized is not a real "local" bike shop. I was looking to buy a bike and asked if the wheels could be swapped out for a better pair. "We have not done this before sir" What would we do with the wheel set?" It's better that you sell them yourself"

 

Same answer about upgrading the group set- "We have not sold a group set to date"

 

Common guys, get real- be a bike shop

 

It is not about you dude, it is about the brand. First, swopping stuff around would wreak havoc with their one-stop solution to fleecing your bank account, and second, swopping it with other brands would ruin their vertically integrated colour scheme.

 

If you do this you may have some choice, some individuality and not the charisma of an Investec consultant. You may even respond “Good Morning” on morning rides on the Atlantic Sea board and take you head out of your … for a moment.
